Today's Guardian wrote that North Korea appears to be preparing to conduct a nuclear test in a show of defiance towards Donald Trump, who has not ruled out military action to pressure the regime into abandoning its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programmes...
Yesterday's NYT published the following: In an unusually strong editorial, Global Times, a newspaper that reflects the thinking of China’s leadership, said Beijing would support stiffer United Nations sanctions, including “strictly limiting” oil exports to North Korea should it conduct a nuclear test. The editorial, indicating nervousness about what the North might do on Saturday, said that the peninsula was the closest to “military clashes” since 2006. “China, too, can no longer stand the continuous escalation of the North Korean nuclear issue at its doorstep,” the editorial said. “Instead of accepting a situation that continues to worsen, putting an end to this is more in line with the wish of the Chinese public.”... Yesterday's Korea Times reported the following: Presidential frontrunners Moon Jae-in and Ahn Cheol-soo have virtually dropped their opposition to the deployment of a U.S. anti-missile shield in South Korea in an apparent bid to appeal to conservative voters. Moon, a former chairman of the Democratic Party of Korea, said Tuesday that South Korea can "push ahead" with the ongoing installation of a U.S. Terminal High Altitude Area Defense(THAAD) battery...
On the same day A senior Chinese diplomat on held a second round of talks with South Korean politicians on the bilateral dispute over the deployment of a U.S. missile defense system here. Wu Dawei, Beijing's chief negotiator on North Korea's nuclear program, met with Rep. Kim Moo-sung, election committee chief of the splinter conservative Bareun Party... During the talks at the National Assembly, the two sides apparently repeated their positions on the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system, according to Kim... "The Chinese keep expressing their opposition to the THAAD deployment, but I said the THAAD issue is already a finished story. Its deployment has already begun, so I said it would be best not to talk about it anymore," the lawmaker said... (source: Yonhap, 4.12)
Exactly: "The THAAD issue is already a finished story"!
Why? Because... on the same day the S.K. military started to move the equipment into the planned THAAD deployment site. But to avoid a (possibly violent)confrontation with the local anti-THAAD resistance the stuff was/is delivered by airlift...
And while during this process - at least - the local anti-THAAD resistance became "powerless"... it seems that Moon Jae-in &co. came to the conclusion: We don't need to support them anymore!!
Last Thursday(4.06): 2,550 S. Koreans, including residents in Seongju County and Gimcheon City of Gyeongbuk-do(province), filed a suit with the Constitutional Court against the THAAD deployment moves of the U.S. and S. Korean authorities... At the same day the 'Seongju Committee for Struggle against THAAD Deployment', 'Gimcheon Citizens Measure Committee against THAAD Deployment' and other organizations held a press conference outside the Constitutional Court to file the suit...(source: Yonhap)
Two days later(4.08): Activists from all across S. Korea arrived by "Peace Buses"...
...to protest the planned THAAD deployment in Seongju's vicinity.
Thousands of people gather in Seongju, located some 300 kilometers south of Seoul, to protest the government's decision to allow the U.S. to deploy a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense battery in their town on April 8...(source: Yonhap, 4.09/Here you'll get the detailed report, incl. lots of pics, by KCTU)
