What is to add? First of all: Lee Soo-ho (president of KCTU) made a speech on the final rally. But unlike last year’s struggle of disabled people, here on the main demo he was pushing a activist’s wheelchair, he left directly after the rally. When the time came that the situation was getting more serious (on the Mapo Bridge, MP) nearly all the organized unionists, street vendors, poor people… left the scene. So, on the end, the final battle just about 200 activists – disabled people, supporters of irregular workers, students, SP members – were holding the position, and confronted with the riot cops. After the taking over the MP the cops promised, if we give free just one line for traffic, we would get back the first six arrested activists. Many people believed it and so we did. Only because of that you’ve to understand the following atmosphere (after “The MB was in the hand of the demonstrators”). Short after that some units of the riot cops were starting new attacks (we found out, that their “leaders” were complete unorganized, definitely totally confused. Of course we fought back and possibly in this situation the real “leadership” of the cops made the decision to f… us, to finish the “party” by force. On the other side, like one comrade said, it was from the beginning their (cops’) plan to break the demo by force. Anyway on the end at least 70 people were arrested and several wounded. S. Korea’s “rulers'” way to celebrate the “Day for Disabled Persons”!!!

o 불법노점 벌과금 때문에 스스로 목숨을 끊은 농아인의 넋을 위로하며,
   - 유족의 생계를 보장할 것을 요구함
   - 농아인의 빈곤문제 등 생존권 대책을 세울 것을 요구함
o 이러한 요구의 방법중의 하나로써,
   - 현재 진행하고 있는 경찰청의 연구에 대하여 강력히 항의함
   - 1종 운전면허 제한을 풀어 운전과 관련한 직종선택의 자유를 요구함
   - 농아인의 인권보장을 위하여 수화언어의 법적인 지위를 요구함
   - 그 외 정보접근을 저해하는 영화진흥법, 선거법, 방송법등 개정을 요구함
o 정부뿐만 아니라 일반사회에 알리어 사회통합에 일조를 하고자 함

YESTERDAY’S REPORT

Today, now since 34 days street vendors are in sit-in strike in front one of Seoul’s main department stores ­ LOTTE. Because of ­ they (the capitalists) call it “development/modernization” - many street vendors are forced to move from there and on that way they lose their basis of existence. About the full background of the case you can read here (the leaflet what was delivered y’day to the citizens). So yesterday a protest rally and demonstration (from LOTTE to City Hall and back to LOTTE) took the streets of downtown Seoul and more than 100 activists of the street vendors movement, supported by some KCTU activists, by the Democratic Labor Party, activists who are defending their homes, Peoples Solidarity and some other activists. At least 360 riot cops were accompanying the demonstration and on Eulji-ro several times they threatened to attack the demonstrators, after all a not real comfortable situation, not really. But even threatened by the riot cops, the demonstration finished without serious incidents. On the final rally in front of LOTTE the activists promised not to give up the struggle until the affected got their rights and at least compensation for the financial loss. LAST DAYS’ REPORT

Last Friday, Feb 18 ­ parts of KCTU decided to hold daily night rallies until Feb 22 on Yeouido, near the National Assembly (the S. Korean parliament) ­ but unfortunately only less than 50 activists joined.
On Saturday, wow it was freezing cold, the activists who are trying to save the Cheonseong-san (Mountain) organized a culture festival in front of the new Seoul Station from where the KTX, the S. Korean version of a high speed train is driving to Pusan. The audience, mainly about 30 persons, even it was so cold, had a lot of fun, especially about the performances of Dopehead and Acomda.
After the event the activists, some came from Pusan, Masan, Iksan, went to the KCTU (Seoul Regional Council) and held there a kind of nationwide assembly to talk about the past activities and the future actions. Deep in the night the participants decided to continue the activities, because the pressure against the government must continue.
For yesterday KCTU (here you can see a impressive video about KCTU’s current problems) was calling for a central mass rally to demand improvements for the situation for irregular workers. In the early afternoon about 5000 unionized workers ­ there are 8.000.000 irregular workers in S. Korea, and KCTU has around 800.000 members ­ gathered in Daehak-no to held the rally. Just before the official beginning of the rally large units of the infamous riot cops arrived and wanted to drive the participants away from the main road, but because of the massive resistance the failed and gave up their plans.
About two hours after the beginning of this powerful rally the next rally ­ demanding the abolishing of the National “Security” Law ­ started on the same place. After the rally a demonstration to downtown’s Gwanghwamun, where the final rally was planned, started. There thousands of riot cops were occupying the neighborhood, but no new incidents were happen and the day of protest ended peaceful. LAST DAYS' STRUGGLE REPORT (서울, 南朝鮮, 01.19)

First of all since today you can see a very impressive documentary about the struggle of the activists in 삼각/수하동(을지로 2-가) made by 숲속홍길동. You can watch it here.
Before yesterday, January 17, a protest rally and demonstration took place to support the people in Wolgok-dong(Seongbuk-gu/district).

Here the activists since long time are defending their homes - the same old f... story: the Construction Mafia(C.M.) wants to build new apartment blocks and the former residents, who only rented houses/flats there will be kicked out, because the owners of the houses already sold their buildings and land to the C.M.
On the rally about 60 activists from different areas, such as Osan, Cheongjin-dong, Yeongsan 5-dong, but also some activists from NOHAK(Student Solidarity for the Liberation of the Working Class) gathered in the early afternoon in front of Seongbuk-gu (district) Office.
The rally was followed by a demonstration to Jongam Police Station, where the persons are sitting, who are responsible for the ongoing free attacks of criminal gangs, hired be C.M. and backed by the riot cops.
Yesterday in the evening a protest was held in front of Seoul's Kyobo building near Gwanghwamun to support the struggle against a huge highway project leading through the Cheonseong-san (mountain).

Here, if the project get reality many species, such as the Korean Salamander are in great danger. Also here the same old f... story: the capitalist aim of maximize the profits is destroying everything and everywhere, no matter if it the environment or areas were "ordinary" peoples are living and working since centuries, such as in Cheongjin-dong. Today Ji Yul, a Buddhist female monk, is in her 84th day of hunger strike against the project.

Even the weather was not really comfortable, we had the entire time a really icy wind, the organizers of the rally (Friends of the Korean Salamander/도롱뇽의 친구들) managed a great program: Of course there was a open microphone for the voices of "ordinary" citizens, but also the cultural and political(Dopehead, Acomda, a dancing group of female irregular workers, ETU-MB...) contributions got enthusiastic applause from the audience.
