LAST DAYS’ REPORT

Last Wednesday, March 2, in the early afternoon more than 100 street vendor activists and some supporters protested against the expulsion of street vendors from the area around LOTTE Department Store (LDS) in Myeong-dong (here you can read the article and see pictures about the rally and demonstration).

PROTEST RALLY Against the oppression of street vendors Tuesday, March 8, 1 pm LOTTE department store Myeong-dong

Latest news: Last night/very early morning the sit-in struggle collective in front of LDS was attacked by criminal gangsters, hired by LOTTE group. The attack was backed by the riot cops. The latest about that you can see here, read here and here. JOIN TUESDAY'S PROTEST!! Like every Thursday evening on March 3 peace activists gathered in front of Kyobo B/D near Gwanghwamun to protest against the ongoing aggressions in Iraq and the participation of South Korean troops in that war crimes. The number of participants and also the performances were nearly the same like the weeks before.

But on that evening there was one surprise: Kang Cheol-min, a former military service man, spoke to the audience (more pictures about the event you can see here). In November 2003, when the S. Korean government decided to send more additional combat troops to Iraq, Kang Cheol-min decided he just had spend some vacation days not to return to his army unit as a protest against the government’s plans. Some days after his birthday, on Nov 22, he was arrested and sentenced to one and half year prison. Now, last Thursday, in his speech - just some days ago he was released after spending one year and three month in prison - he thanked all his supporters for their solidarity, he promised never to give up his struggle against militarism and invited the audience for a kind of official “Welcome Ceremony” one days later. So on Friday about 20 people followed the invitation and joined together with Kang Cheol-min’s friends and relatives his coming back. After the “official” ceremony the participants had a nice get-together in an atmosphere of solidarity and a kind of unity until deep in the night. Meanwhile yesterday about 600 people (according to the Internet magazine Voice of the People - the reporter was not able to report personal, 'cause the lack of money) gathered in Pyeongtaek, a city south of Seoul against the relocation of USFK (United States Forces Korea) troops, still located in and north of Seoul. Since long time the citizens there are struggling against the troops already stationed there and of course they are also against the plan of relocation. Here you can read an article about yesterday’s rally and here about a struggle event last year. Here just some impressions of the last days by pictures:

YESTERDAY’S REPORT

Today, now since 34 days street vendors are in sit-in strike in front one of Seoul’s main department stores LOTTE. Because of they (the capitalists) call it “development/modernization” - many street vendors are forced to move from there and on that way they lose their basis of existence. About the full background of the case you can read here (the leaflet what was delivered y’day to the citizens). So yesterday a protest rally and demonstration (from LOTTE to City Hall and back to LOTTE) took the streets of downtown Seoul and more than 100 activists of the street vendors movement, supported by some KCTU activists, by the Democratic Labor Party, activists who are defending their homes, Peoples Solidarity and some other activists. At least 360 riot cops were accompanying the demonstration and on Eulji-ro several times they threatened to attack the demonstrators, after all a not real comfortable situation, not really. But even threatened by the riot cops, the demonstration finished without serious incidents. On the final rally in front of LOTTE the activists promised not to give up the struggle until the affected got their rights and at least compensation for the financial loss. Here just some impressions of yesterday’s rally/demo by pictures:

지난 일요일/탑골공원

Everything what I think about that: no real contribution for the people communication, not really (or should I say: just a f.. action?)! Just hatred of all our neighbours.

反戰/이주노동자… (報告)

LAST DAYS’ REPORT

First of all: yesterday’s migrant workers rally/demonstration was organized by KCTU, but in fact nothing was organized. But let’s come later to the issue. Just let’s start with the beginning. Last Thursday (02.24), like now since 8 weeks every Thursday counter globalization action korea and their friends held an anti-war protest in front of Kyobo B/D, downtown Seoul, near the US embassy. Even it was very cold and only few people joined the event, it was just fun for everyone, the activists, audience and by-passers. The rally was opened with a anti-war performance and followed by an open microphone. Later the moderator of the rally read the latest letter from an activist from Baghdad, where he was writing about the current situation there and the hope for freedom and peace in the near future. Some songs were played and finally the audience and by-passers were invited to prepare anti-war facilities. More about the event you can read and see here.

Last Saturday in Ansan’s an industrial town southwest of Seoul Migrant Worker Center the 5th Migrant Workers Culture Festival was held. Because the strange situation, now nearly every day immigration officers and police are hunting migrant workers there, only few of them were able to join the event but nevertheless the atmosphere was nice and powerful. The following get-together and common meal actually was so good that my ride back to Seoul was very late. In fact it was to late, because in Shindorim station the subway service stopped and the way from there to Seodaemun-gu is f… long, especially on feet…

Yesterday, Sunday, Feb 27, like planned by KCTU, the migrant workers struggle rally and demonstration took the streets of Seoul. But even from the beginning there were several serious problems. For example there were no sound system, no stage on the spot. Fortunately Peoples Solidarity for Social Progress was able to bring a loudspeaker car. So, even with delay, the rally could begin. But unfortunately only few migrant workers were able to join the protest, with the same reason like the culture festival in Ansan. And for a protest, organized by the KCTU only few union activists/organized workers participated on the rally. So the majority of the demonstrators were student activists (THANX A LOT FOR ALL, WHO JOINED!!) all together we were less than 250 people. So actually not a real powerful protest was possible (at least 500 riot cops were hanging around there and later many of them followed the demonstration), but that is just the current reality.

Following just some impressions of the last days by pictures.

활동안에 "민주주의"

Today G. W. (Double U - what the U’s are standing for? Uneducated? Underexposed?) Bush is visiting Germany after the “world ruler” held court in Brussels (NATO headquarter/EU center). Everyone who wanted to meet him, like the French president, had to come to there. Tomorrow after the short visit in Germany he will fly to Bratislava/Slovakia, where he will meet the Russian president Putin. By the way, it’s just a humiliation for Putin. In the German city Mainz, not far away from Frankfurt/Main, the chancellor Schroeder at the time is meeting with his American guest. Since the early morning hours nothing is going anymore in the region between the cities Frankfurt, Wiesbaden and Mainz, one of the main busy areas in the western part of Germany. Nearly all highways (Autobahnen) are closed. The river Rhine is closed for the ship traffic. In Frankfurt there is the main airport in Germany and the second large in Europe many flights (estimated more than 100 flights) are cancelled. The train traffic is also massive affected. The Opel’s (GM) main car factory in Ruesselsheim, like many other factories in the region, must close today, because the workers can’t reach their work places. In Mainz itself, the entire inner city is closed area. Nearly all shops and department stores are closed, schools too. The people who are living there are not allowed to open the windows, to use their balconies and “of course” all traffic private and public is banned. And also (of course) all demonstrations against the Bush’s policy are banned from the inner city. And who will pay the enormous costs for that? Of course neither Bush nor Schroeder will pay from their own pockets the German ordinary tax payers have to pay for this massive intervention in their “freedom”. This is just DEMOCRACY IN ACTION! Thanx a lot for this lesson! We will know to learn from it! Last news: in Mainz right now about 15.000 people are protesting against Bush (according to indymedia Germany, 02.23, 6:23pm, MET).
