i was there at the candlelight vigil, playing my guitar to sing 'put the gun down' with Byeol-um-ja-ri-pyo. people were singing along with us, all of a sudden 200 cops came in, started arresting people brutally, crushing the vigil, beating up people who were resisting, people were screaming...
it was like hell. it was like a riot cop party.
they arrested 18 peace-loving people who were just sitting down and listening to our music.

진정한 다문화주의를 주제로 한 이번 스콧 버거슨의 책 <더 발칙한 한국학>에서 특히 나의 눈길을 끈 부분이 제4장 "종로의 이방인"이었다. 그의 돋보이는 필력도 필력이었지만 무엇보다 지난 1년 한국사회를 광란의 소용돌이로 몰아간 광우병 파동에 대한 이방인으로서의 그의 시각이 무척이나 이채롭고 신선하게 느껴졌기 때문이다. 미국 쇠고기의 위험성에 대한 단순한 건강문제에서 극우와 극좌, 보수와 진보의 극렬한 정치투쟁으로 비화된 그 현상을 버거슨은 이라크 전쟁을 일으킨 장본인 조지 부시와 연계시켜 롤랑 바르트의 <현대의 신화>로 매우 설득력있게 설명하고 있다. 정치, 사회, 문화, 미디어의 모든 분야가 보수와 진보 진영으로 나뉘어, 때로는 진실을 호도한 채, 서로의 주장만을 내세우기 급급하고, 광우병 촛불시위의 상흔이 아직 완전히 가시지 않은 현 시점에서 그의 글은 넓게는 한국사회 전반을, 좁게는 광우병 사태를 좀더 냉정하게 객관적으로 뒤돌아볼 수 있는 좋은 계기가 될 것 같다.

Rodong Shimbun was of course correct. I was one of those young folks listenig to jazz and rock and leaving my socialist home country (East Germany). Found happiness in West Germany and New York! But now, I'm living in Japan and that's even better!
