Working Women - Take a Rifle

A woman worker in simple clothes brandishes a rifle before a large factory. The image reflects the large scale employment of women in the industrial labor force which began during World War I and continued through the Soviet period. During the Civil War of 1918-20, when most of the country had broken away from Soviet control, all citizens, men and women alike, were expected to participate in civil defense and active fighting.
