nformation about korea activism is weak abroad
M
abub - Was part of the previous attempt to start an indymedia, said that most of the members were non-Koreans, and that many people eventually left so they didn't have enough people to continue
Doyoung - There was also a misunderstanding between mediaact and the Korea imc activists who were working with Migrant Workers Trade Union. (a partial history of this previous attempt is posted on this blog)
미원 - people are generally too busy to translate and be activist. so there is a need for finance and time to lead the voice of korean progressive movement.
승현: there is still no truly open publishing web-site in korea, with international network, therefore indymedia would fill an important role
범 : should we go through an organization, be "umbrellaed" or make our own?
마붑 - 5 years ago one of the major problems was the identity of the group that approached the global indymedia network. most of them weren't korean. thinks we need to work with an organization, we don't need to create an own organization, but work with other existing ones.
도영 - korea national media activist network is an example of one of the groups we could work with as an umbrella group. he spoke recently with some friend about the idea of creating an imc korea and the friend was interested.
마붑 - I think a little differently. its important to think about organizations that don't specifically deal with media. feminist groups or groups that don't already have a comprehensive network.
미원 - I think that there is a need for a stable centre, a base of operations to take off. need a core, to get more people involved, then enlarge and encourage other people to be involved.
무나 - isn't that what the homepage is for? isn't the website the base of operations. is it necessary to work with a physical organization. how has it been handled in other countries?
승현 - some imc's have offices. online meeting place and offline meeting place?
Of course we need a place for the server.
미원 from her experience it is difficult to maintain an online center without an offline center to meet and process with others.
마붑 - sort of a problem that there were so more foreigners than koreans. needs to be diverse. seoulidarity started small but got bigger.
미누 - MWTV Migrant Worker TV is trying to revamp their website. They already translate in many languages. could work with IMC korea.
hajime - be careful about mixing origins. imc korea is not to provide independent media where it doesn't exist. korea is rich in that. we should open up different channels. despite the diversity of independent media in korea, there are many problems with different factions and different groups fighting each other. perhaps that internal conflict is one of the reasons it didn't work last time.
미원 how does the national media activist network meet?
도영 they meet to discuss once a year and communicate through an email list.
마붑 - there are lots of organizations, the biggest problem is language. there was base 21 which is like imc korea, there were lots of organizations working together and submitting together on that project. we could collect the information ourselves rather than leave it up to the groups to figure it out themselves.
범 - I suggest that too about a network. not necessarily a network of orgs., but of individuals who can approach and communicate between the groups.
Jeff - it should have an independent identity. not be absorbed in a preexisting group. people could think it is run by that group and have less legitimacy.
It should not be a translation service group
We can find group or people who already wrote in english to submit to indymedia.
mabub - we can do screenings and other things offline
Doyoung - will it be specifically in two languages? Korean and English?
people thought that imc had a political agenda that was different from theirs
we are making a space, not a specific political instrument
outreach's job is to encourage other groups and people to use it.
a tool to be used.
editing can organize articles by category. press release, 등
We should encourage individual reporters who aren't representing organizations
people could find articles and translate into english and publish
