Lead, Cadmium, Smoking, and Increased Risk of Peripheral Arterial Disease

Background—Lead and cadmium exposure may promote atherosclerosis, although the cardiovascular effects of chroniclow-dose exposure are largely unknown. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the association betweenblood levels of lead and cadmium and peripheral arterial disease.

Methods and Results—We analyzed data from 2125 participants who were
40 years of age in the 1999 to 2000 NationalHealth and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Peripheral arterial disease was defined as an ankle brachial index 0.9 in at least 1 leg. Lead and cadmium levels were measured by atomic absorption spectrometry. After adjustment for demographic and cardiovascular risk factors, the ORs of peripheral arterial disease comparing quartiles 2 to 4 of leadwith the lowest quartile were 1.63 (95% CI, 0.51 to 5.15), 1.92 (95% CI, 0.62 to 9.47), and 2.88 (95% CI, 0.87 to 9.47),
respectively (P for trend0.02). The corresponding ORs for cadmium were 1.07 (95% CI, 0.44 to 2.60), 1.30 (95% CI,0.69 to 2.44), and 2.82 (95% CI, 1.36 to 5.85), respectively (P for trend0.01). The OR of peripheral arterial diseasefor current smokers compared with never smokers was 4.13. Adjustment for lead reduced this OR to 3.38, and adjustment for cadmium reduced it to 1.84.

Conclusions—Blood lead and cadmium, at levels well below current safety standards, were associated with an increased prevalence of peripheral arterial disease in the general US population. Cadmium may partially mediate the effect of smoking on peripheral arterial disease. (Circulation. 2004;109:3196-3201.)

10년전 정확히  1997년 말 나는 IMF사태가 터지고  당시 새로 출범하는 총학생회 간부를 하게 되었다.

그 때 새로출범하는 김대중 정부의 신자유주의 정책에 대한 반대 대자보를 썼었고 세계화와 극단적인 시장주의 주장하는 어떤 학생과 대자보로 논쟁을 했던 기억이 난다.

당시에는 현실적으로 신자유주의에 대해서는  잘 몰랐었고  무척 추상적(혹은 관념적으로)으로 신자유주의 대한 반대를 주장했었고 별로 반박 글을 잘 쓴 것 같지는 않지만, 10년 전 내가 주장했던 내용이 별로 틀리지는 않았다는 생각이 든다. 지난 10년동안  일인당 평균 국민소득은 두배 가까이 늘었지만 10년 동안 대다수 서민들의 삶이 나아진 점이 있을까? 벌어진 빈부격차,  늘어나 비정규직과 줄어든 좋은 일자리,  심해진 물질 만능주의(화폐물신주의),

FTA 체결 이후 더욱더 가속화될 신자유주의적 사회재편을 겪은  10년 뒤의 한국 사회는 얼마나 더 끔찍해질 것인가?

소위 시장( 하지만 시장에 대한 두가지 의문점:  1. 독점 자본주의단계에서 공정한 시장이 가능할까라는 점,  2. 국가(혹은 특정 정치세력)가  보장해 주지 않는 시장이란 가당한 이야기일까?)에서의 강자 독식과

'억울하면 돈 벌어라' 식의 사회 분위기( 10억모으기 카페 등등 - 몇 퍼센트의 가난한 노동자가 과연 아끼고 투자 잘해서 10억 모으기가  가능하까?).........

이런 사회에서 살고 싶지 않다.

우울하다.
