The reading passage and the listening lecture tell about the concept “Altruism”.
First, it clarifies the definition of the Altruism. Alturistic behavior refers to something that animals or people do for the benefit of others, not anticipating one for themselves.
For instance, we can easily associate the case of organ donation to the concept of Altruism. Among animals, there is one called ‘meerket’ , which can be thought as altruistic. One of the Meerket stands guard while others eat their food, in case the predator like hawk would attack the Meerkets. This guard meerket doesn’t receive any kind of reward for the conduct it does for others. 오히려, the guard meerkets are more likely to be in danger when their enemies try to attack them because they have to flee alone later.
However, some people have a different opinion on the term Altruism.  They say the altruistic behavior aren’t sole sacrificing act as a whole. When we donate our organs to family members or share our food with strangers, we receive appreciation both from those strangers and society.
Some meerkets who have eating habits before they stand guard for the other meerkets and also flee as quickly as possible into the holes dig in the ground after they alarm others for the danger of predators. ]
Thus, when thinking about these meerkets and the example of non-material reward from others that human receive for doing good deed, the concept of Altruistc behavior doesn’t wholly refer to the sacrificing behavior for others. Rather, it is the behavior for both people who conduct the behavior and the others who receive benefits from the good deed.
