제가 지금부터 1년 정도 박사논문 현장연구를 위해 한국에 머물게 됐습니다. 그 기간 동안 지인 한분과 함께 "상호성과 도덕경제"를 주제로 다음의 텍스트들을 읽어나갈 생각입니다. 세미나 운영방식에 밝혀두었지만, 12월부터 2주에 한 번씩 진행할 예정이고 텍스트의 분량이나 내용은 주제를 크게 벗어나지 않는 한에서 구성원 간의 합의하에 조정가능합니다. 함께 하시는 분이 지방에 계셔서 기본적으로 학기 중에는 주말에, 방학 중에는 주중에 세미나를 진행하는게 좋을 것 같지만, 시간 및 장소도 합의를 통해 조정하겠습니다.

Beyond Reciprocity:
Moralized Market and Marketized Morality in the Era of Neoliberalism
1. 세미나 개요
이 세미나는 최근 “윤리적 자본주의”, “박애자본주의”, “호혜경제”, “공유경제” 등의 이름으로 등장하고 있는 도덕경제 담론들과 그 구체적 실천형태들—기부, 자원봉사, 기업의 사회적 책임CSR, 공정무역, 윤리적 소비, 사회적 투자 등—을 비판적으로 검토하는 것을 목표로 한다. 한국 사회에서는 “사회적 경제” 혹은 느슨하게 정의된 “경제 민주화”란 이름으로 논의되고 있는 이러한 자본주의의 윤리적 전환에 대한 호소는, 근래 회자되는 자본주의의 위기·파국 담론과 맞물려, 좌·우파를 초월한 호응 속에서 소위 신자유주의의 “시장만능주의”에 맞서는 구체적 대안 혹은 이데올로기로 자리 잡아가는 것처럼 보인다. 흥미롭게도 이러한 일련의 담론 및 실천들은 지금까지 상대적으로 주변화되었던 경제인류학적 지식인 마르셀 모스의 선물-경제 혹은 칼 폴라니의 “사회에 착근된 시장”에서 자신의 이론적 근거를 마련하고 있으며, 이러한 논의에서 도출되는 상호성(혹은 호혜성reciprocity)의 도덕 원리에 기반해 새로운 형태의 “사회연대”를 모색하고 있다.
이러한 배경 하에, 세미나의 전반부는 모스의 선물-증여와 상호성의 원리를 둘러싼 기존의 인류학적·철학적 논의들을 검토함으로써, 상호성과 그것에 기반한 “사회적인 것”의 문제설정을 넘어 비-상호성과 “정치적인 것the political”의 영역에 대한 탐구로 나아갔던 일련의 이론적 시도들을 조망해 볼 것이다. 다소 거친 분류이기는 하지만, 선물교환을 둘러싼 논쟁사에서 한편에 선물-교환 속에 내재한 상호성의 원리에 천착하고 이를 발전시켜 온 이론가들―모스, 레비-스트로스, 그리고 최근의 에나프와 그레이버까지―이 존재한다면, 다른 한편에 이 상호성 너머를 고민해 온 흐름들―바따이유, 데리다, 들뢰즈, 클라스트르―이 이와 대립한다. 세미나는 이 두 경향을 절충하기보다는 의도적으로 이 두 흐름을 대립시키고, “사회적인 것” 대 “정치적인 것” 혹은 “상호성” 대 “비상호성”으로 대표될 수 있는 두 흐름 간의 생산적 대화를 시도함으로써, 오늘날 “정치 없는 사회계약” 혹은 “탈정치화된 도덕적 연대”를 추구하는 윤리적 자본주의 담론에 대한 "이론적" 차원의 “문제화”가 어떻게 가능할지 모색해 본다.
세미나의 후반부는 도덕·감정의 영역으로서의 “사회”와 이해관계·계산의 영역으로서의 “시장” 간의 중첩에 주목한 다양한 사회과학적 연구들을 통해, 오늘날 “도덕·감정·사회 경제화” 현상이 가진 역사성과 특수성을 살펴보는 것을 목표로 한다. 먼저 기존의 고전적 연구들이 시장, 사회, 도덕 간의 관계를 어떻게 조명했는지를 살펴본 후, 최근 변화된 조건 속에서 이러한 관계들이 사회학·이단 경제학·인류학 등에서 어떻게 논의되고 있는지 대표적인 저작들을 통해 살펴본다. 이후 도덕·감정·사회와 시장 간의 중첩을 징후적으로 보여주는 몇몇 키워드들—“모럴 해저드”, “책임”, “감정노동”, “공동체”—에 대한 논의들을 검토함으로써, 이러한 변화에 내재한 모순을 살펴보고 이러한 변화가 “신자유주의화”, “금융화”, “문화경제화”로 묘사되는 최근의 자본주의 동학과 어떤 관계를 맺고 있는지 살펴보고자 한다.
