Approx. 10,000 members of the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union(KTU) gathered yestreday(10.19) in front of the "Independence Gate" in Seoul's Seodaemun-gu(district) to protest the government's denial of their freedom of association, after 3 days union ballot(related article: Teachers' union defies government).

In a one-month ultimatum sent to the Korean Teachers and Education Workers’ Union (KTU) on 23rd September, the S. Korean government has threatened to deregister the teachers’ union if it does not amend its by-laws to ban dismissed and retired teachers from their union membership. The KTU will be deregistered unless it revises the provision in its by-laws by 23rd October 2013...
But KTU is still resisting! From last Friday evening until yesterday noon - supported by thousands of KCTU activists and members of several solidarity groups - they staged demos, protest rallies and a powerful culture festival in the center of Seoul...
