KMWU Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) Branch members go on a 2-hour walkout today. Already, through strikes and rallies, the KMWU Daewoo Shipbuilding Local members have been protesting the backroom-deal merger of Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) with Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME). Although some 100,000 workers have already been pushed out of their jobs in the harsh restructuring of the Korean shipbuilding industry since 2014, this deal portends more livelihoods thrown into risk throughout the supply chains as well. The merger of the world's biggest shipbuilder with the world's second largest shipbuilder by sales would create a global dominant player with monopoly power, and undermine the already tenuous balance of the ecosystem of shipbuilding and shipbuilding parts companies. Social and economic impacts of this merger which has global implications should be taken into consideration.
