A thousand days after the sinking of the ferry Sewol, the disaster is still a controversy as survivors and victims' families say they continue to suffer as their suspicions remain unanswered. The sinking killed 304 passengers, most of them students of Danwon High School in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, on a school excursion. Nine passengers remain unaccounted for and the Sewol still lies on the seabed off the southern Jin Island...(source: K. Times, 1.09)
Therefore the first candlelight rally of the new year had been held in honor of the Sewol ferry disaster(aka Sewol Massacre). Hankyoreh reported last Friday(1.06): During a press conference(1.05 @KCTU's HQ in Seoul), the organizers of the rally (known as the Emergency Nationwide Campaign for the Resignation of Park Geun-hye) announced that the title of the 11th candlelight rally, which will be held on Jan. 7, is “Down with Park Geun-hye and Up with the Sewol Ferry.”
Last Saturday(1.07) afternoon/evening: Hundred of thousands of South Koreans took to streets across the country, demanding - once again - that scandal-tainted President Park Geun-hye step down. It was the 11th consecutive weekend rally, which first started on Oct. 29 over an influence-peddling scandal centered on Park and her long-time friend Choi Soon-sil... With some 1,500 civic groups involved, the first rally of the new year at Seoul's Gwanghwamun Square centered around the Sewol ferry, whose sinking off the country's southwest coast in April 2014 took the lives of more than 300 people, most of whom were high school students on a field trip... Holding placards critical of Park and lit candles, protesters demanded the immediate resignation of the president and the salvage of the Sewol, which has yet to be retrieved from under the sea. Organizers said about 600,000 gathered for the rally in central Seoul...
Similar anti-Park rallies were also staged in major cities across the country on Saturday, including Ulsan, Busan...
...Gwangju, Daegu...
...and Daejeon, with protesters calling for Park's resignation and the Constitutional Court's approval of her impeachment...(source: Yonhap, 1.08)
The related report by KCTU(in Korean, but incl. a lot of pics) you'll get here.
Former students at Danwon High School, who survived the sinking of the ferry Sewol, will have their voices heard at a candlelit protest against President Park Geun-hye, Saturday.
The rally organizers said Thursday that this year's first and the 11th rally altogether will commemorate the incident...
It is the first time for the surviving students to make a public appearance to tell their stories since the sinking took place on April 16, 2014, while some have appeared in individual media interviews.
"We will call for a thorough investigation of the Sewol disaster and mete out due punishment to those responsible," the organizers said at a press conference at the Seoul office of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU).
Marking the 1,000th day since the disaster, which falls on Jan. 9, the organizers will jointly host the rally with the relatives at 5:30 p.m. at Gwanghwamun Square. The surviving students and relatives of those who died will take the stage to criticize the government's inept response to the sinking...(source: Korea Times, 1.05)
Lawyers representing President Park Geun-hye said Thursday that protesters at the candlelit rallies did not represent the people because a North Korean sympathizer orchestrated the gatherings... Over the past 10 weeks, more than 10 million people have gathered to demand Park's resignation over an influence-peddling scandal involving her confidant Choi Soon-sil... "Protesters who gathered near Cheong Wa Dae with candles do not represent the people as a whole," they said. They alleged that the organizer of the candlelit rallies was a North Korea sympathizer. "The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions organized weekend rallies. And the composer of a song satirizing Park, which was sung during the rallies, was previously arrested for violating the National Security Law by praising former North Korea leader Kim Il-sung"...(source: Korea Times, 1.05)

Calls for the ouster of President Park Geun-hye continued to echo in the streets, on the last day of 2016, with 1 million protesters gathering in central Seoul.
The number of participants in Saturday night’s rally brought the cumulative number of people who have attended the protests since October to 10 million, according to rally organizers...
During the protest, rally-goers marched up to a point 100 meters from the presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae, the acting president’s office and the Constitutional Court, while demanding Park be punished and for a swift decision from the court.
A festive mood spread across the grounds as it was the last day of the year. Participants enjoyed cultural performances(an impressive example you'll get here) and events, including firecrackers and laser shows.
After the rally was over, a lot of the citizens remained to watch the symbolical New Year’s Eve bell-ringing ceremony at Bosingak, a large bell pavilion at Jongno in central Seoul to welcome the New Year...(source: Korea Herald, 1.01)
