Two weeks ago(1.09) Korea Times reported the following: 60-year-old Euljiro industrial district being torn down to make way for high-rise apartments. For seven weeks, Lee Bae-woong, 75, and his son have been trying to salvage what they could from their 38-year-old hardware store in Euljiro, downtown Seoul. With excavators due in a week, they were running out of time. "The construction company will bury me under lawsuits if I don't move out by Sunday," Lee lamented as he looked at the remaining clutter on the store's floor and shelves, Jan. 3. Today in the morning(KST): Latest bad news, provided by the Cheonggyecheon Anti-Gentrification Alliance(CAGA)...
Some hours later, around noon(KST) CAGA staged an "emergency press conference" in front of Seoul's City Hall under the motto: "Preserve the living history of craftsmen and merchants in the Cheonggyecheon-Euljiro area!!"...
Afterwards CAGA proclaimed to the press: The Seoul Metropolitan Government's 'Review of Preservation' announced this morning does not include its commitment to the three zones that are being torn down. Eulji Myeonok, Joseonok, and Yangmiok are designated as living heritage because they are old historic sites. Do you(Seoul Metropolitan Government!!) mean that the rest of the Euljiro industrial/manufacturing area is only OLD TRASH? The entire readjustment promotion zone established should be designated as 'special manufacturing and cultural industrial zones'...
Almost at the same time K. Times wrote the following: [A]rtists ― commonly regarded as agents of gentrification ― have taken central roles in the fight against the destructive changes taking place in the Euljiro area alongside its traders and craftsmen. About 30 artists are actively participating in Cheonggye Stream Anti-Gentrification Alliance (Euljiro area is also commonly referred to as the Cheonggye Stream area in Korean due to its proximity).
