Top SPA leaders to spearhead Tuesday's demonstration in capital

The agitating seven-party alliance (SPA) on Sunday decided to stage a "huge" political showdown, which will be led by the top brass leaders of the alliance, in the capital on Tuesday.

The SPA also claimed that over two million people will participate in the Ring Road-centred demonstration.

This is the first demonstration to be held under the leadership of the top SPA leaders since the alliance-called nationwide general strike began on April 6.

A meeting of the SPA's People's Movement Central Coordination Committee held in the capital today decided that Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala will spearhead the demonstration from Maharajgunj, CPN-UML General Secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal will lead from Kalanki and NC-D President Sher Bahadur Deuba  from Gongabu.

Likewise, President of Jana Morcha Nepal, Amik Serchan will lead the demonstration from Satdobato, Nepal Majdoor Kisan Party's president Narayan Man Bijukchhe from Koteshwor, Bharat Bimal Yadav, vice-chairman of Nepal Sadbhawana Party (Anandidevi), from Sita Paila and Bishnu Bahadur Manandhar, president of Samyukta Bam Morcha will lead from Chabahil.

In spite of the government-clamped curfew, the SPA had successfully staged its Ring Road picketing programme.

The SPA also appealed to all to participate in Tuesday's demonstrations.

Meanwhile, at least three protesters were injured when security men opened fire on a demonstration against the royal proclamation at Koteshwor, Kathmandu Sunday afternoon.

The injured were taken to hospital for treatment.

The situation at Koteshwor turned tense after the firing on what was largely a peaceful demonstration.

Peaceful demonstrations were also held at Samakhusi. Hundreds of pro-democracy demonstrators assembled at the Samakhusi chowk defying the curfew orders. A huge rally from Gongabu joined the demonstration there.

Official work at all government offices and state-owned enterprises in Dharan Municipality came to a halt as the employees continued their agitation, expressing solidarity with the ongoing general strike. They protested chanting slogans against the royal proclamation calling it “irrelevant and useless”.

Our Chitwan correspondent reported that a rally of thousands led by women was taken out in Narayangadh. The rally which began from the Shahid Chowk of Narayangadh marched through Chaubiskothi, District Police Office road, Bypass Road and Pulchowk.
