May 21, 2009, was the day when the Ssangyong Motor labor union went on strike(related articles in English you'll get on LabourStart). The union was resisting the company’s decision to lay off 2,646 of its total 7,135 workers...
Last Saturday(11.15), almost 2000 days later: About 500 workers gathered in front of Ssangyong Motor plant in Pyeongtaek, an industrial city 70km south of Seoul, to recall the beginning of the strike and its bloody suppression 77 days later. The gathering started in the afternoon with a protest rally(a Korean report, incl. lots of pics, you'll get here!) and ended late at night with a powerful Struggle Culture Festival.

"Nov. 13th is Ssangyong Worker Victory Day!"
But today's (bourgeois)Korea Times reported the following: More than 150 workers fired by Ssangyong Motor in 2009 won't be able to return to work after the Supreme Court ruled Thursday that the carmaker's mass layoff was conducted within the boundaries of the Korean Labor Law. The top court overturned a ruling by the Seoul High Court on Feb. 7 in favor of 153 dismissed workers seeking to be reinstated, and sent the case back to the high court for re-consideration...(for more reports please check out LabourStart!)
Irregular workers from the broadcaster Cable and More(C&M) set up a protest camp on the sidewalk outside the Seoul Finance Center in central Seoul(nearby Gwanghwamun!!). They've been camped out there holding a sit-in strike since last July, calling for a solution to the irregular workers issue. But until now... - surprise, surprise(^^) - C&M's management refused to be engaged in any negotiations with the protesters, resp. their labour union!
So, today two trade union activists climbed up a billboard tower(hight: 30m!!) in front Seoul Finance Center and vowed to stay there(here you can watch/MUST SEE!! a video, depicting the first minutes of the occupation!!) until the dispute between C&M and the labor union will be successfully settled...
2,000 days ago: May 21, 2009, was the day that the Ssangyong Motor labor union went on strike. The union was resisting the company’s decision to lay off 2,646 of its total 7,135 workers...
77 days later the strike was bloody smashed by the riot cops...
But the affected workers never gave up their rights!
Last month: "The latest ruling on 153 workers laid off by Ssangyong Motor in 2009 has left them in a legal limbo of sorts. Suwon District Court ruled Monday(10.13) against a request by the workers that they be reinstated to their jobs until the Supreme Court makes a final ruling..."(K. Times, 10.14)
On Nov. 13, the Supreme Court will examine the suit filed by Ssangyong Motor workers to have their lay-off revoked...
And there's/will be RESISTANCE(currently very PEACEFUL!): 2,000 people - workers, citizens, Buddhist monks/nuns etc. are bowing(2,000 days since the beginning of the strike/2,000 bows in front of the Supreme Court building in Seoul's Seocho-dong)...
Yesterday(11.9) afternoon/evening in central Seoul: About 30,000 KCTU members hold a ceremony, incl. several struggle demos/rallies, to mark the 44 years since the death of labor activist Jeon Tae-il and keep his spirit alive.
