Yesterday's Hankyoreh reported the following: Despite the subzero temperatures, 60 or so migrant workers came out to Seoul’s Gwanghwamun Plaza on the afternoon of Dec. 16 to mark International Migrants Day. On Sunday, groups including the Migrants’ Trade Union and Migrants Act launched an event called “Nationwide Joint Action on International Migrants Day” on the stairs leading up to the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in Seoul. “Korean society traps migrant workers in the legal categories of ‘foreign workers’ and ‘illegal aliens’ and refuses to recognize them as members of society. Migrants are humans and workers, just like everyone else. Migrant workers should also be guaranteed legitimate rights as members of society,” demonstrators said...(more you can read here)

"Cheong Wa Dae hopes to hold a fourth inter-Korean summit as early as possible. During the last meeting between Moon and Kim, they agreed to hold a fourth summit before the end of the year. But no talks are underway between the two Koreas over arranging a schedule for the possible Seoul summit this year, even with the year-end deadline approaching. 'There still remains a faint hope that the Seoul summit can take place this year as agreed-upon by the two leaders,' Cho[Han-bum, a senior researcher of the policy unit at the Korea Institute for National Unification] said..."(source: K. KCTU reported(via fb) y'day evening(KST) the following: In the middle of the night on Dec. 11 Kim Yong-gyun, a 22-year-old subcontracted worker, died in an industrial accident at the Taean thermoelectric power staton, when he was caught in a conveyor belt. Kim had to work alone despite the risk associate with his job. Subcontract power plant workers have been fighting for a year for direct employment, inline with the government's guidelines, but to no avail, resulting in Kim's tragic death. Today, memorial protests were held in Seoul, Taean and around the country and will continue throughout the week and until we win justice for Kim and direct employment for power plant and all public sector precarious workers.
