10년 전에(#5): 명동농성투쟁/인물 사진...

Ten years ago: During the nearly 10 weeks of our occupation(*) of Myeongdong Cathedral’s compound downtown Seoul, comrade Mahbub, a 'senior' migrant workers activist, made some fascinating portraits of our "comrades in arms"...

* "Now since nearly ten weeks we, KCTU/ETU-MB (Korean Confederation of Trade Unions/Equality Trade Union – Migrants’ Branch) members, unorganized migrant activists and some Korean supporters, are occupying Myeongdong Cathedral’s compound in the heart of the South Korean capital Seoul. By using this means we are fighting against the government’s policy of manhunt and mass deportation of migrant workers. And we promise the South Korean government: We will stay here even it is bitter cold (right now in some nights we’ve temperatures until minus 18 degree), until they’ll meet our demands!" REMEMBER THE

YONGSAN MASSACRE!!

Today, five years ago: At 6 a.m., residents who were asking for solutions to avoid eviction in February in Seoul's Youngsan-gu(district) lost their lives as a consequence of STATE TERROR. A 1500 strong force of riot cops, incl. SWAT and "anti-terror" units, was dispatched to disperse about 50 protesters. The police actions taken toward these protesters were similar to those taken in times war. Less than a day after those facing eviction started protesting and without further conversations or an effort to discuss the issues, the government dispatched a special police force and staged an anti-terror operation. After the police entered the building where the protesters were, a fire broke out and the circumstances became dangerous. However, without taking any safety measures, the police proceeded with the operation which resulted in the death of 5 protesters...(source: KCTU, 2009.1.27) [Related reports/detailed info you'll get here, here, here etc...]
