A hybrid form of Korean yoga has really caught on in America over the past few years. It's called Dahn Hak, and while it's popular with tens of thousands of students, for many, it feels like a religious cult. Dozens of former Dahn students have alleged that brainwashing and mind control techniques are used, along with high-pressure sales tactics. And now, a program inspired by Dahn Hak has made it into our public schools.

Dahn Hak yoga has made major inroads in the ten years since it made the jump from South Korea to the U.S. It now has 147 centers in 14 states, including two centers in Southern Nevada. An estimated 50,000 Americans enjoy the unique blend of yoga, martial arts, and eastern spirituality.

Dahn Hak was born in Korea in the mid 80s, created by Il Chi Lee, now known as Master Lee. Lee essentially hopes to change the consciousness of the planet, in part by helping people to make better use of their brains. After getting into trouble in the early 90s for manufacturing illegal health supplements, Lee brought his expertise to a new headquarters in Sedona, Arizona and turned it into a multi-million dollar business empire with legions of devoted followers. But not everyone sees Dahn Hak in a positive light. In fact, many former students believe it's a cult that depends on mind control, brainwashing, and pushy sales tactics to win converts.

Hassan says he has counseled -- and deprogrammed -- 14 former Dahn Hak students and that, in his opinion, this organization fits the classic mold. "I see a lot of people after they've left the group. They're still distraught having panic attacks, anxiety attacks, sleep problems, nightmares."

A former Dahn Hak student told the I-Team, "I felt like I was in shock." This Las Vegas woman, we'll call her "Cheryl," says her experience with Dahn Hak was one of the worst decisions of her life. She visited the Dahn center in Summerlin to take yoga but quickly realized this wasn't like any yoga she knew about. The instructors told her they could basically fix whatever was wrong with her.

At the urging of her instructor, Cheryl signed up for a weekend retreat in California where she says she was systematically and emotionally deconstructed. She returned to Las Vegas a basket case.

It was Cheryl who told the I-Team that Dahn instructors had created a special program for school kids at Booker Elementary in Las Vegas. A teacher at Booker who was a Dahn disciple started it five years ago. Another Dahn instructor, university professor Geoffrey Leigh, took it over. The intent is to use so-called brain respiration to energize and motivate the students. To date, there's little empirical evidence to suggest it does much for grades or test scores, but the kids sure seem to enjoy it.

Dr. Leigh says it's not really a Dahn connected program. "It really isn't a type of brainwashing, as much as trying to encourage, like other brain programs for kids, to use their brains. In ways they can choose to do so."

"No, I hadn't heard of that until a few days ago," she said.

From what we saw during limited visits, we heard no attempts to brainwash the kids at Booker Elementary, and the students did seem energized by the exercises. But the critics say this kind of technique for youngsters makes it far more likely they can get sucked into Dahn Hak later in life.

Booker Elementary School in Las Vegas is the only public school in America where the teachings of a hybrid form of Korean yoga is being taught to kids. Teachers at Booker think the program is valuable, but they admit they had no idea that it stems from a group that many regard as a dangerous cult.

Master Lee, the Korean founder of the Dahn movement, reputedly possesses supernatural powers, healing powers, and believes himself on a par with Jesus or Buddha. Dahn yoga is regimented to get the body in shape so the mind can be tackled next. "Dr." Lee, who holds honorary degrees only, created the concept of brain respiration that is energizing and focusing the brain to the point that kids can read books without ever opening them. Children play a special role in the Dahn movement. In Korea, ads for Dahn are kid-friendly. The centers use cartoonish icons.

A former Dahn student named Nathan Hale told the I-Team from Korea the seeds are being planted for a new religion. In the U.S., thousands of satisfied customers enjoy the yoga exercises at centers like the one in Summerlin. But on anti-cult websites and chatrooms, legions of former students complain that they were brainwashed or were subjected to mind control and had to be deprogrammed to escape. Some say they were told to leave their families, divorce their spouses. Is Dahn a cult as many allege?

The group even sells little dancing brains to its members.

The kids seem to like it and teachers say the results are encouraging. At Booker, the Twelve Days of Christmas became the Twelve Days of Brain Respiration . Principal Beverly Mathis is enthusiastic about programs that get the students motivated, but admits she had no idea this program stems from Dahn Hak or even what Dahn Hak is.

Dr. Geoffrey Leigh of UNR is a Dahn Hak student himself and oversees the Booker program. He says no one is trying to hide anything. "Every year we've used the term. We've not made it a big deal out of it. We're not trying to hide it either." Dr. Leigh says the Booker program isn't linked at all to any Dahn centers and it incorporates other disciplines.

However, the students at Booker are a type of experiment. Leigh wrote a paper about them, co-written by a Dahn instructor, and on Dahn websites the Booker program is touted as a major success story, even though results are sketchy at best. Dr. Leigh admits he'd like to see the program expanded. "Our hope is to get this expanded to other schools and help teachers learn to do this with kids."

Dahn centers are expanding in Las Vegas and elsewhere. Eyewitness News sent one of our producers in to sign up. She reports the yoga was intense and satisfying, that the instructor vowed to help her with an assortment of health problems, and that on her first day, they talked to her about attending Shim Sung, which is the weekend retreat that sent "Cheryl" to a hospital. "Macy" said, "It's not physical. It's mind. It's spirit. It's discovering who you are. He said it's the greatest thing he's ever been to."

Teachers at Booker say they see better attitudes and better focus among the students as a result of this program, although there's very little empirical evidence of any effect on grades or test scores or even attendance. Dr. Leigh encourages anyone with questions about his program to come and check it out, which is what we hope school officials will do before any steps are taken. As we said, the students really seem to like it, as do the teachers. It's just that everyone needs to know the full story.

As far as little empirical evidence to support brain respiration work at Booker, in one of the five years the program's been underway at Booker, they used a control group to see if students who didn't get Dahn training would do as well as those who did. The control group -- the ones without the training -- did better academically, but Dr. Leigh says it turns out the control group was a better bunch of students to begin with and the Dahn group was even with the control group by the time it was over.

Dahn Hak: Yoga Program Or Dangerous Con?

(CBS) CHICAGO Dahn Hak is a controversial and expensive exercise program sold at centers all over the world, including Chicago.

Dahn Hak Yoga is a blend of exercise, meditation and so-called brain respiration created by Grand Master Ilchi Lee.

A former Dahn instructor, who asked that his identity be concealed, says the energy check is a sales gimmick.

She realized that after signing contracts for classes and private healing sessions, even buying Dahn gimmicks like vibrating power brains to help healing.

I-Team Investigates Yoga Group Some Call A Cult

members
that promises healing and peace through yoga. The problem: some say the group is a high priced, dangerous cult.

Veronica Siverls Dunham is talking about her sister Julia, a 41 year-old college professor whose mission was to become a master of Dahn Hak, a group that says it teaches yoga and holistic health at 147 centers around the country, including eleven in Massachusetts.

But the I-Team has learned there is a lot more to Dahn Hak than just yoga.

To become a master, one thing Julia had to do was hike up Casner Mountain in Arizona with 25 pounds of rocks in her backpack.

According to fellow hikers, there were only three bottles of water for all five hikers on the 20 mile trek.

Julia collapsed several times under the hot desert sun, but continued on at the urging
of the group.

What happened to Julia Siverls shines a spotlight on a group that some experts say fits the model of a destructive cult, that has torn apart families and has cost some members thousands of dollars.

Many of his followers start off attending basic yoga classes.

Mind control expert Steve Hassan says Dahn Hak uses its centers to lure people in. He has formed his opinion after studying the group and, for a fee, counseling former members.

Ari Laquidara runs the Dahn Center in Jamaica Plain.

His father Charles, a Boston radio personality, contacted Steve Hassan after Ari chose Dahn Hak over graduate school.

Ben Lucal had a different experience. He left Dahn Hak after two months.

The I-Team has talked with other former Dahn members who have even more serious complaints.

And there is one woman, an instructor in the 1990's, who has sued the organization alleging she was brainwashed and that leader Il Chi Lee forced her to have sex with him.

The Dahn Hak group settled the case without admitting any wrongdoing.

Dahn Hak has plans to open more centers in the Boston area. Currently, the organization claims to have about 1,500 members in Massachusetts and 50,000 across the country.
단학은 현재 보스톤 지역에 더 많은 센타를 오픈할 계획을 가지고 있습니다. 그들은 현재 메사츠세츠 지역에 1500여명의 멤버가 있고, 미국 전역에는 약 5만여명의 회원들이 있다고 합니다.

After our report aired, a spokesman for the Dahn Center
Association sent a statement saying Dahn training "helps people channel their
energy more efficiently to optimize their own power" and is "the complete
antithesis of a cult." The spokesman disputed many of the claims of the Siverls
lawsuit, saying there is no requirement to take a hike of any length to become a
Dahn Hak master. He also stated, "Dahn Yoga does not advocate any use of illicit
drugs let alone lacing someone's food with drugs."

That damn hiking is not required to be a dahn hak master, but it was a part of the master program. Such a manipulator!)
