Consumerism and the Power of the Editor

On February 3rd, we appeared, or rather an image of us was manufactured, to make content for a show on KBS called Love in Asia. This show usually focuses on family values within the context of married couples in Korea within which one of the partners is an immigrant from a neighboring Asian country. Yet, our portrait was that of Western foreigners doing the particular activity of finding useful stuff within garbage and redistributing it for free. What did our activities have to do with this show? What did the show say and not say? We have something to say about it.

It seems that this show is about national culture and lifestyle differences. In doing so, it gives importance and frames concepts like "nation states" (and “their” culture) and "individuals" (and “their” choices). It is impossible for foreigners to appear on this show without a state flag attached to his/her face, even when one does not recognize that state as his/hers (we have tried not to be categorized in certain ways and have failed). (Please see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyyC2CR66iY). Moreover, the main character of the show, not always clearly mentioned yet therefore maybe even more omnipresent, is Korea. "How is Korea and how should it be?" seems the main question of the show.

About our action, what was said is: “Look at these foreigners and what they do in Korea. Are Koreans discarding too much useful stuff?”

What this question hides, and what we wanted to highlight (repeating it literally for hours during shooting interviews for the show), is the structural cause of this waste. We name it capitalism(perhaps the most significantly repeated word during the shooting, and it was "edited out"!). It is not about something "Korean" (at least not in the essential and cultural sense), unless you mean by "Korean" merely the policies enforced by the state called Korea.

Let us look at examples of structural causes of waste: to survive competition, that is to make as much profit as possible, corporations, especially, but even family businesses too, have to get rid of merchandise as soon as the space they occupy can be used by another product that will produce more profit, however useful is the discarded stuff. Furthermore, these economic agents are structurally incited to say whatever is necessary in advertisements to make people buy their products. Even when people make their "personal consumption choice", there might be very rational reasons to throw away still useful stuff: its often cheaper to buy a whole new set than just changing the needed part. Even about fashion, striving to look successful and well informed by buying expensive, new and fashionable stuff is not that an irrational strategy and certainly not something to despise. We might just be more privileged in terms of not having to care about our appearance. That is not to say there is nothing to denounce about the delusive claim to satisfaction of symbolic consumption, about passive spectator-ship, but here we don't want to simply separate "individual choice" from structural context.

More than anything, we hate to be seen and portrayed as good doers (in any moral sense). If that helps, let us say that we also steal stuff instead of consuming. We are not ascetics who sacrifice ourselves and our life for some ideal or something else. We are not only refusing to co-operate to a system by not consuming, we are choosing a way different than consumption for the sheer joy of empowerment and creativity: experiencing directly and unconditionally satisfaction in obtaining and creatively re-using stuff, developing skills and sharing all of it freely, carelessly. We do not want to show "the way." We just want to open a new space by showing a different way and providing analytical tools about this system and, more than anything, inspiring creative direct action. Was it what you obtained through "Love in Asia"?

In the middle of being filmed by “Love in Asia” camera operators, our continuous rejection to the demands of the camera operators and the director was our struggle. It almost felt like warfare. In order to make our image consumable, the director and camera operators needed to fit our image into the realms of commodification. For example, a scene of us eating rice-cake soup was broadcast, but this wasn’t something that we would have originally been eating or doing. The director and camera operators planned the scene, cooked the rice cake soup and when we ate it, they filmed it. Before they started filming, they asked us to go outside to eat because the inside of our house couldn’t be considered “beautiful” from the viewpoint of their camera lens. The consumability or commodifiability of an image might be dependent on fitting that image into a preconsumed or precommodified standard of beauty. When the camera operators were filming giraffe’s dumpster diving adventures, the camera operators demanded that giraffe only search through trash with “acceptable” appearances and they complained when giraffe dug through piles of dirty trash. Whenever the director and camera operators ran into an unconsumable image, they either complained or demanded to do this or that or go here or there. Until our image was commodified, the director and camera operators spent a lot of energy artificially producing our image. Should television-safe images be dependent on their capability of becoming commodified? Our experiences with “Love in Asia” only strengthens our desire for independent and alternative media.

Let us be no fools: this reality show is script-driven. They have a target "market" audience and a consumable product to manufacture for them. You should see (we have images) how much we have fought to not have to act up their script. However, in the end, the power is to the editors, so let’s become the editors! Let’s become the media! http://indymedia.cast.or.kr
