18-hour curfew in Kathmandu, Lalitpur

The royal government has imposed an 18-hour-long curfew within the Ring Road areas of Kathmandu and Lalitpur districts with effect from early Thursday morning.

The move to clamp down the curfew comes at a time when the agitating seven-party alliance (SPA) is set to stage a “huge” capital-centred political showdown tomorrow.

The 2am-8pm curfew tomorrow is set to disrupt the SPA’s planned Ring Road picketing programme. However, Kathmandu and other parts of the country have witnessed huge pro-democracy demonstrations by the SPA defying curfew orders in the recent past.

Demonstrations continue

With significant number of public participation, pro-democracy rallies and demonstrations continued across the country on the 14th consecutive day on Wednesday.

The SPA-called nationwide indefinite general strike, which has crippled the normal life for the last two weeks, however, didn’t disrupt the national polio campaign today.

Demonstrations were held in Patan today. Protesters from various parts of Patan converged at Mangalbazaar and marched through different parts of the city chanting pro-democracy slogans. The procession with significant number of participants also called on the locals to join the SPA’s protest demonstrations and participate in the Ring Road picketing programme slated for Thursday.

Demanding the restoration of complete democracy, protesters staged demonstrations at Jorpati, Naikap, Budhanilakantha, Balaju, Gongabu, Naya Baneshwor and Banasthali, among other places. Today’s demonstrations, however, remained peaceful compared to the previous days.

A torch rally was taken out from Budhanilkantha and concluded at Galfutar. Likewise, a rally taken out from Banasthali converged into a corner meet at Gongabu, New Bus Park.

Civil servants demonstrated for another day today demanding complete democracy.

Employees of the Home Ministry and Nepal Rastra Bank staged demonstrations today as well and said they will continue with their protest programmes until the civil servants who are under government detention were released.

Employees of the Office of the Auditor General also demonstrated against the government since early this morning.

Employees of the Kathmandu District Court, Nepal Oil Corporation, Transport Department, Nepal Agricultural Research Council, Department of Industry, state-run banks, Nepal Stock Exchange, Butwal Power Company, and other government offices, staged anti-government and pro-democracy demonstrations today.

Similar demonstrations were staged by the employees of Nepal Telecom, and all the employees of Higher School Education Board and Education Department. They halted their work Employees of Kathmandu Metropolis Office also staged an hour-long demonstration today.

Likewise, Drinking Water and Storage Management Department, Veterinary Department, Parliament Secretariat, Irrigation Department and Nepal Television and Radio Nepal employees staged pro-democracy demonstrations in front of their offices.

In Dharan, all teachers and students of the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences brought official work to a halt this morning. They also staged a corner meet in the premises of the Institute.

In Dang, SPA supporters took out a pro-democracy rally which passed through major parts of Ghorahi, the district headquarters. Likewise, police in Dailekh arrested two teachers and three students from a peaceful demonstration staged in the district headquarters.

Similar pro-democracy rallies and demonstrations were staged in Palpa, Dhading, Nuwakot, among other districts.
