May 18 is the 36th anniversary of the Gwangju Democratization Movement. It’s a day when we should be pledging efforts to honor the noble goals of those who sacrificed themselves for democracy and ensure that it flowers further in South Korea. Yet reality is moving in the opposite direction completely...(Hankyoreh, 5.18)
On May 16, the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs officially decided not to have the attendees sing "March for the Beloved" in unison at the ceremony commemorating the 36th anniversary of the May 18 pro-democracy movement...(Kyunghyang Shinmun, 5.17)
Song banned for Gwangju ceremony. The government has denied calls to recognize a song symbolizing the May 18 Democratic Uprising. “Marching for our Beloved” ("임을 위한 행진곡", Lyrics by Baek Gi-wan, composed by Kim Jong-ryul, translated by Robert David Grotjohn)
Verse1
We will leave no honors, no love, no fame.
We promised to keep working on, long as we shall live
Streams and mountains remember though the years pass by
Waken’d spirits are calling us as they shout this cry:
“We are marching on; keep faith n follow us.”
“We are marching on; keep faith n follow us.”
Verse2
Dear comrades have gone; our flag still waves.
While working for days to come we will not be swayed
Streams and mountains remember though the years pass by
Waken’d spirits are calling us as they shout this cry:
“We are marching on; keep faith n follow us.”
“We are marching on; keep faith n follow us.”
