May 18 is the 36th anniversary of the Gwangju Democratization Movement. It’s a day when we should be pledging efforts to honor the noble goals of those who sacrificed themselves for democracy and ensure that it flowers further in South Korea. Song banned for Gwangju ceremony. The government has denied calls to recognize a song symbolizing the May 18 Democratic Uprising. But, (alsmost)all South Koreans(except the reactionary media such as Dong-A/Chosun Ilbo, semi-fascist groups like the Korean Parents Association and last but not least the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs) recognize ‘March of the Beloved’ as the official song that represents the May Gwangju people’s uprising. On Wednesday, South Korea is set to commemorate the May 18 democracy movement in which citizens of Gwangju, 371 kilometers south of Seoul, rose up against the then-military rule of former general-turned-President Chun Doo-hwan in 1980. Last Saturday(5.14) in Gwangju: KCTU called for an 'Nat'l Workers Rally' to commemorate 36th anniversary of the Gwangju Uprising(aka 5.8 Democratic Uprising)... but only a small number(3000) of activists joined the event(i.e. KCTU's following demands: "Stop the so-called 'Labour Reform'!", "We want 10,000 won as Minimum Wage!", "Free Han Sang-gyun!", "Let's Achieve Peace on the Korean Peninsula!")...
