민주주의 만세!

VIVA LA DEMOCRACIA!

(^^)

Bookstore hit with Nat'l Security Law (Hankyoreh, 5.04)

Police raided the offices of an internet book seller that had been selling the North Korean novel Ggot Paneun Cheonyeo ("The Flower Girl") and South Korean publications that circulated mostly underground in the South's universities during the 1980s, when pro-democracy campaigns prevailed across the nation against the dictatorship of then general-turned-president Chun Doo-hwan, and arrested the bookstore's chief executive on charges of violating the National Security Law.

The Gyeonggi Provincial Police Agency arrested the 52-year-old individual, who is only identified as a surname Kim, on May 1 and sought an arrest warrant against him on May 3 on charges of possessing and selling "publications advantageous to the enemy" under the notorious National Security Law. Police said Kim violated the National Security Law by selling the publications such as The Flower Girl and The Sea of People ("Minjungui Bada"), which hail North Korean regime and emphasize a social revolutionary ideology, via the Internet.

On April 30, police searched the Internet bookstore's offices and seized computer hard drives and about 200 books with classic 80's titles such as "Rethinking the Time Around Liberalization" (Haebang jeonhusaui Insik), "Philosophy Essay" (Cheorhak Essay), "Jeju Civic Uprising" (Jeju Minjung Hangjaeng) and "Russia Revolution" (Russia Hyeongmyeong). In addition, police said, "Discussions are underway with prosecutors on whether to apply charges against people who have purchased the books, too, after analyzing computer hard drives."

However, Kim rebuked police for applying the charges, saying, "I just resold books that could buy at any secondhand bookstore via the Internet. It's unacceptable that police applied the charges to me because I sold ordinary North Korean books."

Kim Seung-gyo, an attorney at a law firm Justice & Peace Law Group said, "Already, more than 90 percent of lawmakers support a move to scale down the categories of "publications advantageous to the enemy." It's nonsense that the police are trying to punish a person who just bought and sold books that were considered pro-North Korean more than a decade ago."

"If he doesn't exploit the book as an agitation tool to hail or advertise North Korea, it is an overzealous move by the police," he said.

The Flower Girl depicts an ordeal by a family whose members were forced to serve as slaves at a landlord's house because of a small debt incurred during the colonization era (1910-1945) by the Japanese Imperial government. The Sea of People features a housewife who became an anti-Japanese activist and encouraged her children to fight against the Japanese Imperial military forces after her husband was killed by Japanese soldiers in battle. Both were made into movies, and most South Koreans know of the works because they are performed as operatic dramas for visiting South Korean dignitaries who go to Pyongyang.

Well, in 2002 I saw the first time a rally against NSL (and I commented it..^^). Later I joined more protests against NSL..

But - in my opinion - until now nothing changed.. Only few people were/are fighting against this f.. BS.

And now.. Perhaps in only few month all possibilities to abolish NSL are over (just imagine what will be happen when GNP is on "power")..

反한미FTA/노동조합

The S.K. "left"-liberal Hankyoreh (in its English edition) published today following:

Labor movement divided on approach to FTA

The nation's two umbrella labor groups are split about the free trade agreement with the United States.

At a press conference on May 2, officials from the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) and the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) talked about a joint plan to stop the U.S.-Korea FTA.

South Korea and the U.S. announced in early April that they reached an agreement on the FTA talks between the two countires. The FTA deal has yet to be approved by the two country's congress respectively before going into effect.

When they were about to read a joint statement, however, Woo Mun-sook, the KCTU spokesperson, urgently requested the reporters to remove the Federation of Korean Trade Unions (FKTU) from the list of organizations participating in the statement.

Until now the two umbrella labor unions have cooperated through the ad hoc Korean Alliance Against the U.S.-Korea free trade agreement (FTA). However, once the FTA negotiations were over, the FKTU has declared that it would take a "realistic approach." Even when the negotiations were over, the FKTU employed what it called a "pragmatic" strategy to actively involve itself in the negotiation process rather than urging the government to just halt the talks.

The differences could be seen in speeches made at the two groups' separate May Day events. KCTU chairman Lee Seok-haeng called for the agreement to be nullified, while FKTU chairman Lee Yong-deuk proposed the formation of a "pan-Korean body" to respond to the FTA.

KCTU is against the FTA altogether. FKTU has taken the position that the agreement needs "followup" measures.

"Our basic position is that we urgently need to provide support for sectors which will directly suffer a heavy blow instead of clinging to impractical struggle tactics" said Lee of the KCTU.

In contrast, the FKTU chairman said, "Korea is expected to suffer serious damage, to the degree it will have to change more than 100 provisions of its laws. Therefore, this is not a question to be solved by simply preparing follow-up measures.''

http://english.hani.co.kr/arti/english_edition/e_national/206952.html

PS:
Likely that's just the result of the reformist ("small-bourgeois"^^) alignment of the anti-FTA movement!???? Eh~ sorry, that's just my opinion..

THE INT'L STRUGGLE DAY OF THE WORKING CLASS

IN BERLIN/GERMANY

About y'day's events in Berlin the German (bourgeois) magazine Der Spiegel reported following (of course the report is partly just bourgeois propaganda^^):

MAY DAY DÉJÀ VU
Berlin's Ritual Riot

Like a neatly choreographed dance, "revolutionaries" and police engage in a ritual riot in Berlin every year on May Day. This year was no different, with dozens arrested and several people injured.

Every year Berlin observes its own very peculiar tradition. On May 1 -- International Workers Day -- its citizens brace themselves for a day of rioting and mayhem. And this year was no different.

Many Berliners had been hoping that this year's May Day would pass off peacefully, that the idea of a ritual riot had become just a little old hat. And for most of the day it seemed it might actually happen: there were family-friendly street parties and peaceful left-wing demonstrations.

But once night fell, the revolutionary habit was back: gangs of rioters threw stones and bottles at the police and garbage bins were set alight. Several people, including police officers, were injured and there were dozens of arrests.

Nevertheless, Berlin's police chief Dieter Glietsch said that he was pleased with how the operation had gone this year, pointing out that there was a lot less violence than in previous years.

Earlier in the day, around 50,000 Berliners had gathered to enjoy the "Myfest" street party in the Kreuzberg district, which included concerts and various events for children. The festival had been organized by local government, residents and local businesses to try to create an alternative to the traditional revolutionary antics. Two left-wing demonstrations with around 6,000 participants also passed off peacefully.

But once the party was over and the stages had emptied, around 600 people decided there was nothing better to do than have a riot. And while the police initially held back in order to prevent the whole thing from escalating, they eventually began to pick off the ringleaders and arrest them. Still, by midnight the revolution was over.

A tradition is born

The rioters were "celebrating" the 20th anniversary of the first major riot in Kreuzberg in 1987. The district, which belonged to the western part of the then-divided Berlin, was a kind of sub-culture enclave with punks, squatters and assorted revolutionaries living side by side with a large Turkish community. On that first May Day over 900 rioters fought running battles with the police for 12 hours. Shops were looted and cars were set on fire -- and a ritual was born that would be reenacted to a greater or lesser extent over the next 20 years.

In recent years, the authorities have revised the way they deal with the disturbances: Instead of heavy-handed tactics, they now employ a more softly-softly approach, using "anti-conflict" teams to keep the peace and imposing bans on glass bottles and cans at the street parties.

Still, this year the police had been prepared for trouble, and there were 5,000 officers deployed to keep the peace. There were concerns that some left-wing groups might use May Day as a dress rehearsal for protests against the upcoming G8 summit at Heiligendamm in June. And already on Monday night, on the so-called Witches Night, there had been some disturbances in the eastern district of Friedrichshain. A riot broke out after a punk concert, during there were 119 arrests and 15 police officers were injured...

4.29 이주.. 집회

About last Sunday's MTU rally (in preparation of the Int'l Stuggle Day of the Working Class/"Mayday") I found several reports (unfortunately only in Korean):

Only few days before his mission as occupier in Iraq Prince Harry, according to the German (bourgeois) magazine Der Spiegel, already wrote his testament/last will..(^^) "And, as he said to friends, he will miss his family very much" (Spiegel, 4.29). But perhaps very soon he will not only miss his family, but also his ears, if we really want to believe the promise of the Iraqi resistance (once again: ^^).

The British newspaper The Guardian reported following yesterday:

Iraq militia: we have special unit

to target Prince Harry
Shia commander claims insurgents have plan to capture royal officer

Prince Harry will be a prime kidnap target for insurgents in Iraq, a commander in the Mahdi army, the Shia militia loyal to the radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, has told the Guardian.
"One of our aims is to capture Harry, we have people inside the British bases to inform us on when he will arrive," claimed Abu Mujtaba, who commands a unit of around 50 men active in the Mahdi army in Basra.

In comments denounced by British defence sources as "blatant propaganda", Abu Mujtaba told the Guardian: "We have a special unit that would work to track him down, with informants inside the bases.

"Not only us, the Mahdi army, that will try to capture him, but every person who hates the British and the Americans will try to get him, all the mujahideens in Iraq, the al-Qaida, the Iranians all will try to get him."

The Guardian has seen evidence that Abu Mujtaba has a number of men under his command as well as weaponry including rockets, but there is no independent evidence to substantiate his claims that militias have infiltrated British bases, or established a unit to target Prince Harry.

Abu Mujtaba continued: "For me he is just a British soldier and he should be killed if comes to Iraq, but let's be realistic, we can kill hundreds of British soldiers before forcing them to withdraw - like what's happening with Americans now - but Harry is a bigger catch and we will force the British to come on their knees and talk to us."

A senior Iraqi defence ministry official said that militias could overrun Basra relatively easily because they had successfully infiltrated local security forces. "When the Brits formed these forces they depended on these militias for lists of recruits," he said.

Responding to the threats against Prince Harry, a British defence source said: "This is blatant propaganda from those who aim to tear Iraq apart. These threats will not prevent British forces from doing their vital work of building up the Iraqi security forces and helping them to face down those perpetuating violence against the Iraqi people."

The Ministry of Defence yesterday maintained its previous official line, that Prince Harry's deployment on a six-month tour to south-eastern Iraq with his regiment, the Blues and Royals of the Household Cavalry, was under "constant consideration". It added: "It remains our intention that Prince Harry will be deployed as a troop leader."

The Blues and Royals are part of a mechanised brigade to be deployed next month. They will carry out reconnaissance using armoured cars. Reports that an attack by a roadside bomb on an armoured vehicle in Maysan province last week that killed two British soldiers was a "dry run" for an attempt on the prince's life were treated with scepticism yesterday by senior defence sources. However, it was the first time British soldiers have been killed in that type of vehicle in south-eastern Iraq by hostile action and security has been stepped up in the areas where the Blues and Royals will be based.

Defence officials and military commanders are becoming agitated by the intense media coverage of Prince Harry's planned deployment. They argue that it encourages insurgents and militia in Iraq to escalate their propaganda war as well as increase the risks surrounding the prince's deployment. Commanders are concerned that the deployment may increase the threat to all his regimental colleagues, and even to all British troops in the area...

GUERNICA 70 YEARS AGO

FASCIST ARIAL TERROR ATTACK

"Guernica", by P. Picasso, 1937

"Guernica, a city with 5,000 inhabitants.. has been literally razed to the ground. Bomb craters can be seen in the streets. Simply wonderful.", April 26, 1937 the commander of the 'Condor Legion' wrote in his war diary.

It has been exactly 70 years since German and Italian fighter planes backing the fascist forces of Gen. Francisco Franco in the Spanish Civil War leveled this historic Basque town on April 26, 1937.

According to the Basque government 1,654 citizens were killed and nearly 900 injured during the bomb attack. (Der Spiegel, Germany, 4.26)

Actually it was the first arial terror attack against civilian targets in the entire history.
