One Man's Personal Testimony About The Dahnhak Tao Institute
(사례1). Dahnhak Tao 연구소에 대한 한사람의 증언.

I feel compelled to share my experience with people about a fairly new group within the United States called the Dahn Tao Institute also known as the Dahn Center and/or Tao Institute--this is group led by the "Grand Master" Lee Seung Heun. They now have a headquarters/retreat in Sedona, Arizona. This group claims that it's here to "save the world"--through "energy" and "healing". This is supposedly done by "sharing love with the world." My wife became deeply involved with Dahn Tao Institute in Mesa, Arizona. The same "masters" that run this center also fly back and forth to Los Angeles, California. One master once taught at another center around Chicago--they are now expanding everywhere and have centers in Hawaii, New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Virginia, Northern California, Illinois, Texas and Georgia.

When my wife first attended the center it seemed like a good place--a setting where people could go to improve their health through exercises. The center had posters of families exercising together and they looked happy. However, they actually misled my wife and I--as well as other friends regarding the their real purpose and hidden agenda.
제 아내가 처음 그곳에 갔을 때, 아주 좋은 곳 같았습니다. ? 사람들이 운동을 통해 건강을 유지할 수 있는 환경인 것 같았습니다. 그곳에 가족이 함께 운동하면서 행복해 보이는 포스터가 걸려있었습니다. 그러나 그들은 저와 저의 아내, 그리고 저희 친구들을 그들의 진짜 목적과 계획을 숨긴 채 속였습니다.

During 1998 when my wife was first introduced to their exercises--she went every day at 6 p.m. after work and often did not come home until around 9:30 to 11:30 p.m. This was her schedule Monday through Friday. She said the exercises were actually about an hour long. But this did not make sense to me since they kept her there so late--even though they knew she had a family. After about five months my wife participated for two days in an intense form of Dahn exercise called the "Shim Sung". She told me this experience "opened her heart" and she had a physical sensation of release in her chest.

After this ("Shim Sung") stage more of the real agenda of Dahn Tao Institute began to surface. After this stage the center's "head master" told my wife that the "Great Grand Master" (Mr. Lee Seung Heun) had visited the Mesa center--looking for the next "enlightened being" to train under him. They told my wife she was the "chosen one"--a "special person". It became clear the Center had a special purpose for her.
심성수련이 끝나고 Dahn Tao Institute의 진짜 계획이 조금씩 드러나기 시작했습니다. 이 단계가 끝나고 센터의 지원장이 저의 아내에게 “Great Grand Master” (이승헌씨)가 Mesa Center를 방문 했다며 ? 그 아래서 수련할 (“깨달음을 얻으려는 자”)을 찾고 있다고 했습니다. 그들은 그녀가 “선택 받은자” 라면서 “특별한 사람 이라고 했습니다. 센터는 그녀를 위해 특수목적을 가지고 있었습니다.

For five months, my wife spoke constantly about all the energy and "Ki" she received through her meditation with the help of the group's "head master". The Dahn Tao Institute also proclaimed that they could heal themselves and others through energy and "Ki". However, it was somewhat interesting to observe that many of the masters I met wore glasses, which seemed odd. Why couldn't they correct their own vision through the "healing energy" they claimed to posses?
다섯 달 동안, 저의 아내는 시도때도 없이 그 단체의 “지원장”의 도움으로 명상을 통해 받은 에너지와 기에 대해서 말을 하곤 했습니다. Dahn Tao Institute은 그들은 자신과 남을 에너지와 기를 통해 치료할 수 있는 능력이 있다고 주장했습니다. 그런데, 많은 master들이 안경을 낀다는 것이 조금 이상했습니다. 그들은 왜 그들의 시력을 자신들이 있다는 “치료의 에너지” 로 회복 할 수 없었죠?

After some months of involvement with Dahn Tao Institute my wife asked for a divorce and my blessing to set out on her new "quest." She told me that she would no longer need or have a husband, mother and father from the day of transition to her new world--she would now live much like Buddha did. This seemed like a religion or a movement to me and NOT AN EXERCISE CENTER. She claimed that the Dahn center would take care of her food and housing and that all she needed to take with her was some clothes. I asked her if they would pay her or provide health coverage.
Dahn Tao Institute에 다니게 된지 몇 달이 지나고 저의 아내는 이혼을 해 달라면서 그녀의 새로운 “깨달음의 길”을 떠나는 데 저의 축복을 빌었습니다. 그녀는 변천의 그날에서 그녀의 새로운 세상에서는 더 이상 남편, 어머니, 아버지가 필요하지 않을 것이라고 했다. 그녀는 이제 부처와 비슷한 삶을 살겠다는 것이었습니다. 이것은 운동 센터가 아니라 종교나 목적을 향한 운동 같았습니다. 그녀는 Dahn Center가 그녀의 음식과 숙박을 보장해준다며, 가져갈 것은 자신의 옷 만 챙기면 된다고 했습니다. 저는 그녀에게 그들이 그녀에게 월급과 건강 보상도 해주냐고 물었습니다.

She responded that there would be no pay or benefits, but they would provide for all her needs. This appeared like the arrangement Rev. Moon has with his devotees--once called the "Moonies" of the Unification Church. They often seem to essentially work for free while Rev. Moon molds their daily lives, but often provides little more than room and board.

The Dahn Tao Institute told my wife she could sleep at the center until they found a permanent place for her. Soon they planned to place her at their retreat in Sedona for "master training", but this did not make much sense. My wife had only been going to classes for five months and was at the "third level" (out of nine levels) toward attainting her "black belt"--which takes 36 months according to the program.

When I visited the center I saw several "masters"--they were all young, single men and women recruiting and working behind the counter. The "head master" taught from time to time. It is interesting to note the checks for classes were paid to a development business in Sedona called "BELL ROCK DEVELOPMENT COMPANY." They claim that Dahn Tao Institute also has construction and design companies too.
제가 센터를 방문 했을 때, 저는 여러 명의 “master”를 봤습니다. 모두 어린 청년들이었고, 카운터 뒤에서 학생모집이나 일을 하고 있었습니다. “headmaster”는 가끔씩 수업을 했습니다. 수업료를 낼 때 수표를 쓸 때 Sedona에 있는 “BELL ROCK DEVELOPMENT COMPANY” 라는 개발회사에다 내는 것이 수상했습니다. 그들은 Dahn Tao Institute는 공사와 디자인 회사를 소유하고 있다고 주장했습니다.

Throughout the week I tried to reason with my wife about this new radical transition in her life and asked her help for me to understand.
한 주 동안 저는 이 극히 새로운 변화에 대해서 저의 아내를 설득 할라고 했고 저를 이해하게 도와달라고 했습니다.

Dahn center gave my wife several books to read, one after another and as I looked through the book written in Korean the agenda of the Dahn Tao Institute's centers became even more clear to me. First the book was written by the Grand Master himself and he compared himself to Jesus and Buddha--saying he is enlightened like them. Then through the next series of books their agenda is discussed--of spreading centers throughout the world. And also--how this ultimately means they must recruit many new "masters" to perpetuate their growth.
Dahn 센터에서 저의 아내에게 책 여러 권을 줬습니다. 한글로 쓰여진 책들을 하나하나 훑어보면서 Dahn Tao Institute센터들의 음모가 더욱더 현명해졌습니다. 한 책은 Grand Master 이승헌이가 쓴 것으로 자신을 부처와 예수랑 비교하는 것이었습니다. 자신이 그들처럼 깨달았다는 것입니다. 그리고 여러 차례의 책을 통해 그들의 계획이 나와 있었습니다. 센터를 세계에 퍼뜨리는 것을 말하는 것이었습니다. 그리고 최종적으로 성장을 끊이지 않기 위해 새로운 “master”를 많이 모집해야 한다는 것이었습니다.

It became clear to me that Dahn Tao Institute did not care how many families might be broken up and lives ruined by their ambitious expansion. They only cared about growing their business and meeting the goals set by the Grand Master. I spoke with other members I knew and people that I had met through the Dahn Tao Institute--they too were approached to give up everything in their lives to join Dahnhak for a greater quest and more important purpose. One person I spoke with involved in the center had a small child and a Dahnhak master inferred she might need to sacrifice that relationship to become a "master". Another person said they would have to give up a job and ties to family. They seemed to have brainwashed my wife into quitting her job and to seek a divorce--necessary to pursue her "quest."
Dahn Tao Institute는 그들의 야망 때문에 몇 개의 가족을 해체하고 몇 명의 인생을 망치는지 상관하지 않을 것이라는 것이 저에게 확실했습니다. 그들은 단지 자기들의 비즈니스를 성장 시키는 것과 Grand Master 이승헌이가 마련한 목적을 이루는 것에만 신경을 쓰는 것입니다. 저는 제가 아는 다른 멤버들과 Dahn Tao Institute에서 만난 사람들과 얘기해봤습니다. 그들도 모든 것을 포기하고 단학의 따르면서 더 중요한 목적을 위해서 살라고 충고 받았다. 제가 얘기를 나눈 한 사람은 중에 센터를 다녔는데 “master”가 되기 위해서 어린아이를 할지 모른다고 암시했다고 한다. 또 한 사람은 자신의 직업과 가족을 버려야 한다고 했다. 그들은 저의 아내를 세뇌하여 그녀의 “깨달음의 길”을 위해 직업을 그만두고 이혼을 하라고 시킨 것으로 보입니다.

When I told my father-in-law in Korea what was happening, he went to seven Dahn Tao Institute centers in South Korea. He was told him by center staff that typically they do not recruit married people, except when that person has special skills and abilities that may be useful. After hearing this, my father-in-law flew from Korea to the U.S. immediately and retained an intervention specialist.
제가 한국에 계시는 저의 의붓아버지에게 말을 드렸더니, 한국에 있는 Dahn Tao Institute 7군데를 찾아갔습니다. 직원들이 그에게 보통 결혼한 사람은 모집하지 않는다고 했습니다, 단지 그 사람이 유용하게 쓰일 특별한 기술이나 능력이 보일 때만 예외가 있다고 말을 했습니다. 이런 사실을 들으신 후 저의 의붓아버지는 즉시 한국에서 미국으로 날아오셔서 컬트 전문가를 고용했습니다.

During the subsequent intervention, their program unraveled. It was clear that the Dahn Tao Institute Center throughout the five months of my wife's involvement had prepared her through a kind of emotional breakdown, to reach a crucial vulnerable point--then they convinced her that Dahnhak and the Grand Master would play the pivotal role in her quest to become perfected. At least that's what my wife thought, but they camouflaged their agenda through an exercise ritual seemingly designed to gain her trust and manipulate her emotions. It became very difficult to understand what they really are. Dahn Tao Institute appears to be an exercise center, but when you dig deeper they act and sound more like a movement of some sort.
컬트전문가를 고용한 직후에, 그들의 계획이 들어났습니다. Dahn Tao Institute가 저의 아내가 다닌 5달 동안 그녀에게 감정을 약하게 하는 과정을 준비해, 위기에 이르렀을 때, 단학과 “Grand Master” 이승헌이가 그녀를 완성 하는데 중요한 역할을 한다고 설득 시킨 것입니다. 적어도 저의 아내는 그렇게 생각 했습니다. 하지만, 그들은 그들의 계획을 수련을 통해 그녀에게 신뢰를 받고, 그녀의 감정을 조종한 것이다. 그들이 정확히 무엇인지 이해하기 힘들었습니다.

After the "Shim Sung" exercise the Dahn center told my wife that she was ready for the next level--ready to hear what they are all about. She was told to leave me and end our marriage. Though after some deliberation between the masters they told her not to divorce me--since she did not have a "Green Card", and that it would be more cost-effective to remain married so the center could save money regarding a sponsorship. After all, they needed money to open another center in Scottsdale.
심성 수련이 끝난 후, 단 센터는 저의 아내는 다음 단계에 준비가 되었다는 것입니다. 그들이 정말로 무엇인지 알아내는 것이었습니다. 그녀는 저와 이혼하고 버리라고 충고를 받은 것입니다. 그런데 master들이 숙고한 후 이혼하지 말라고 한 것입니다. 그녀가 영주권이 없었기 때문에 결혼한 상태를 유지하는 것이 경제적으로 더 현명한 것이라고 했습니다. 이러면 그들이 보증을 받는데 돈을 좀 아끼는 것 때문입니다. 또, Scottsdale센터 한군데를 세워야 하는데 그들은 돈이 필요 하거든요.

The truth did finally surfaced through the intervention and my wife became "the enlightened one", but not as the masters had told her. She simply saw through their subterfuge and discovered the real intentions and true nature of the group. Three other members also found out the "truth" and left too. Frankly, serving a Grand Master through free labor and surrendering control of their lives was not their goal.
결국에는 컬트 전문가를 통해 진실이 밝혀졌습니다. 제 아내가 “깨달음을 받은 자”가 된 것입니다. 그런데 master들이 말한 것 같지 않고, 그녀는 단지 그들의 속임수를 뚫어보고 그들의 참된 의도와 그들의 본성을 알아차린 것 입니다. “진실”을 알아차린 사람들이 또 세 명이 더 있었는데 모두 단학을 떠났습니다. 솔직히, 공짜로 Grand Master 이승헌을 섬기는 것이 그들의 인생의 목적이 아니였기 때문입니다.

The Dahn Tao Institute goes to churches, schools and businesses to recruit new members. In doing some research I have found that they they don't pay actual salaries to much of their staff at the more than 300 centers in Korea, nor does it appear that they typically provide medical insurance for these devotees of the Grand Master. They are not a non-profit religious organization, but rather a for-profit corporation. The masters at their centers are most often young, single, or divorced and seem to be celibate. One member who went on a trip to Korea with the Dahn Tao Institute said she met a man who left his child and wife to become a master.
Dahn Tao Institute는 교회, 학교, 그리고 비즈니스로 가서 새로운 회원을 모집 합니다. 제가 연구를 하면서 그들은 한국에 있는 300이상 되는 곳에서 직원에게 정당한 봉급을 지불하지 않고, 또한 Grand Master 이승헌이를 따르는 이에게 의료보험을 마련하지 않은 것입니다. 그들은 비영리적 종교 단체이면서, 영리적 회사인셈입니다. 센터에 있는 MASTER들은 대부분 어린 사람들이며, 싱글, 또는 이혼한 사람들이며 독신주의자들입니다. I hope that those who read my story will take this group very seriously. Dahn Tao Institute seems to be about recruiting more and more members for free labor and fees that will make the Grand Master richer--though he is already a wealthy man. This is the "vision" that appears to be the Grand Master's plan for the world through his movement of devoted followers.

I have been involved in various martial arts off and on for a few years and have taken instruction in Tai Chi Chuan, Kung Fu, Tae Kwon Do as well as Yoga and Qi Gong.
저는 몇 년 동안 여러 가지 무술을 이것저것 해보면서 태극권, 쿵푸, 태권도, 그리고 또한 요가와 기공도 배웠었습니다.

While driving I spotted a sign advertising a free class at a local training hall. The sign stated that Yoga, Tai Chi and meditation classes were given. I went in at the next free class and was impressed with the positive attitude exhibited by both the staff and students. I was equally thrilled that the work out made me feel so good. After the free class I was approached by one of the regular students who proceeded to tell me about various benefits of regular Dahnhak practice. Benefits included a new sense of purpose, a stronger sense of harmony with your fellow man and development of Ki (or Chi) power.
운전을 하면서 저는 근처에 있는 수련장에서 공짜 강의를 해준다는 광고를 봤습니다. 그 광고에는 요가와 태극권, 그리고 명상 강의가 있다고 되어 있었습니다. 저는 다음에 공짜 강의하는 것에 참여하고 직원과 학생들의 낙관적인 태도를 보고 아주 마음에 들었습니다. 그리고 운동을 하고 나서 받은 상쾌함도 마찬가지로 마음에 들었습니다. 공짜 수업이 끝나고 항상 오는 학생 한 명이 제게 다가와 평상시에 단학 수련이 주는 좋은 효과에 대해서 설명을 해주었죠. 그들 중에 기의 힘이 발달하고, 타인에 대한 친근감 그리고 인생의 목적이 새로워진 듯 하는 느낌입니다.

The claims he made were not unusual for a martial arts school, but the time in which he claimed these benefits would occur was remarkable. How can you purport that with regular practice you will obtain? certain predetermined goals. You can no more do this for an aspiring musician than you can for a Karate student.
그가 주장한 것은 무술을 가르치는 도장치고 이상한 것 들은 아니죠. 그런데 그가 이 효과들이 생긴다고 하는 시간이 어이없었습니다. 어떻게 평상시에 연습해서 얻을 수 있는 결과가 미리 정해진 듯이 행세할 수가 있죠? 이것은 무술 하는 사람이나 야심을 가진 음악가나 할 수 없는 일이다.

I was also bothered by references to a spiritual retreat, which he was told was where the real spiritual work begins. He also made reference to other retreats and workshops/seminars of which some were free and some not. References were also made to the effect that "spiritual liberation" was also attainable in short order with regular Dahnhak practice.
또 저는 영적인 수련회에 대해서도 좀 심상치 않았습니다. 그가 말을 하듯이 거기서 진짜로 영적인 성장이 시작되는 곳이라고 합니다. 그는 또 세미나, 그리고 다른 수련회에 대해서도 정보를 알려주었습니다. 어떤 것들은 공짜고 어떤 것은 그렇지 않았죠. 또한 단학을 평소에 수련하면 금방 “영적인 자유”을 얻을수 있다고 했습니다.

In all I was put off by the whole affair. To advertise Tai Chi, Yoga and meditation instruction and upon further inquiry find out that there is no set curriculum (one day it might be a Tai Chi class and the next it's Yoga) is disturbing in a school that promises some spiritual liberation.
전체적으로 이 사건에 의해 화가 났습니다. 태극권, 요가, 그리고 명상지도를 선전하면서 더 자세한 정보를 달라니까 실제로 정해진 계획은 없다는 것 입니다. (한날에는 태극권일 수도 있고, 다음날에는 요가일 수도 있다.) 영적인 자유를 약속하는 것 치고 좀 수상합니다.

· First, you cannot promise spiritual liberation under any system of esoteric learning first--because the meaning is subjective and each person begins and progresses at a different level.
첫째로, 소수를 위한 교육시스템 아래 영적인 자유를 약속할 수가 없다. 왜냐하면 그의 뜻이 주관적이며 모든 사람들은 시작과 성장 속도가 각각 다르기 때문이다.

Second because under any one system it takes a lifetime to attain a masters level (if it's ever obtained) as there is always more to learn within any one system.
둘째로, 어느 한 시스템 아래 수련해도 마스터하기 위해 (마스터하는 것이 가능하면) 평생을 다짐해야 한다. 어느 한 시스템 아래 항상 배울 것이 더 있기 때문이죠.

Hopefully more people will come forward to report their experiences with the Dahn Tao Institute.
앞으로 Dahn Tao Institute에 대한 자신들의 경험들을 보고하길 원합니다.


The student who spoke to me seemed disturbingly uneducated about the subjective claims made to him that had him so enthused.
저와 얘기를 나눈 학생은 자신을 열광적으로 하게 한 주관적인 행세에 대해서 너무 모르는 것 같습니다.

My advice is the following:
제가 충고하는 것은:

· Look for a strong and old lineage--the older the system the better; there is more chance that there is good reason it has endured for so long.
무술은 전통이 오래된 것을 찾으세요. ? 오래될수록 좋습니다; 오랜 시간 동안 이어진 이유가 있습니다.

Be very cautious if there are not many texts available regarding the subject so you may read up it.
그 무술에 대해 읽을 거리가 많지 않으면 주의 합시다.

Remember, though sometimes language barriers make accurate understanding and answering of your questions difficult--a good teacher will always try to answer your questions or advise you of informative books in which you can gain better understanding.
언어차이가 가끔씩 자신의 질문을 이해 시키고 답 받는 것을 어렵게 할 때가 있지만 ? 좋은 스승은 항상 상대방의 질문을 답하거나 이해할 수 있도록 자료를 줄 것입니다.

Blind faith does not make you wise--beware of with whom you place your trust. It is entirely possible that a group may actually be a cult whose leader uses ancient references and exercises that have dynamic and profound effects to gain the trust of people--so that he or she may cultivate their own ego and riches.
지혜는 눈이 먼 믿음에서 나오는 것이 아니다. ? 자신의 믿음을 누구에게 주는지 주의하세요.. 어느 한 단체가 믿음을 얻기 위한 아주 효과적인 운동과 수법을 이용하는 사이비종교 일수도 있습니다. 그 사이비의 지도자의 자아와 재산을 늘리기 위해서 말입니다.

Dahn Hak is not what many think it is--it is a cult posing as a business [sic]. Volunteers "--most of them are South Koreans under the age of 27 run this business. They work in the United States in service to Grand Master Lee. They often leave children and spouses behind.

The latest sales pitch is that you can become enlightened in three years if you follow their program. However, this could potentially cost about $3000.00 Can you really buy enlightenment? Is it theirs to sell? Did you know that the senior "Dahn Masters" believe they are "enlightened"? I wonder how much they bought it for?

If you attend Dahn Tao Institute--the next time you go to a bowing ceremony, look around--how many "masters" are practicing at the ceremony with you? All students? Why? "Work is my meditation," is often their excuse. Really, they just don't need to be brainwashed any more and already have been absorbed into the system.

My husband and I are young, active people who decided to do Yoga together for fun. The Dahn Center, which we had never heard of before, offered "Yoga" classes conveniently near our home. We decided to try it out and set up an "evaluation appointment" with a very eager instructor.
저와 저의 남편은 어리고, 활동이 많은 사람들이며 재미로 함께 요가를 하기로 했다. 처음 들어본 담센터가 “요가” 강의를 하고 집에서 가까웠다. 그래서 우리는 한번 가보기로 하고 강사와 “점검 약속”을 했다

I was the first one to go in and immediately was told that I had a lot of problems with my breathing, internal organs, flexibility, etc. I was also told that the Dahn Center's Korean Yoga would solve these problems--if I followed their exercise regimen carefully.
제가 처음으로 들어갔는데 금방 숨 쉬는 것, 장, 그리고 유연성, 등에 문제가 있다고 했다. 또 단 센터의 제가 그들의 운동 계획을 철저히 따르면, 한국요가가 이 문제를 해결 한다고 했다.

I was then harassed to pay for the highest one-year membership which was about $1,500.00. I had to argue that paying such a lump sum all at once would present a hardship for me. But the instructor insisted that it was not--because I "would be doing something good" for myself. I had to argue for a simpler membership, which would allow me to cancel at any time and could be paid by a monthly (nevertheless high) payment.
런 후에 $1,500이 드는 가장 높은 회원으로 1년 동안 등록하게 강요했다. 저는 한꺼번에 그렇게 많은 돈을 내는 것이 저에게 부담이 될 것이라고 했다. 하지만 강사는 “자신에게 좋은 일을 하는 것”이라며 끝까지 강요했다. 저는 아무 때나 취소 할 수 있고 (그래도 비싸게) 매달 낼 수 있는 더 간단한 회원 가입을 해달라고 했다.

My husband then went in and was told that he too was in a dire shape--despite the fact he is an athlete. Likewise, he was also hit for the expensive one-year membership.
저의 남편도 들어가자 그들은 그가 너무 상태가 나쁘다고 했다. 그가 운동 선수임에도 불구한데, 마찬가지로, 그도 비싼 일년 가입을 하라고 했다.


We were both annoyed by the aggressive sales pitch, but decided that we would give it a shot anyway--figuring that since the money business was now settled, we would be able to focus on the classes.

How wrong we were.

We started going to the classes--they were actually not so bad and the instructors were very friendly. However, we soon found out that if we wanted to change levels, we would have to pay for a mandatory evaluation. And we were supposed to "change" levels every month.

우리는 강의를 다니기 시작했다. 사실 그다지 나쁘지 않고 강사들도 친절했다. 하지만 승급을 심사를 보기 위해 돈을 내야 한다는 것을 알게 되었다. 그리고 다달이 승급을 해야 한다는 것이었다.

We found out that besides paying a monthly fee, we would have to add the test evaluations to the total charge. This charge had never been mentioned before enrolling.
그리고 다달이 내는 요금 말고도, 심사비도 합계에 계산이 된다는 것을 알게 되었다. 이 요금은 가입 하기 전에 듣지 못했다.

Needless to say, we were the only ones in the most basic level after two months [because we had not undergone these tests]. We received letters and reminders that we HAD to take the test/evaluations soon--despite the fact that we kept telling them that we just wanted to work out and not bother with all the levels. After each class everyone would meet in the foyer for some green tea--it was during those meetings that the pressure tactics began. We were constantly told that we had to go to all these workshops, which were expensive and finally that we had to go to the "Shim Sung"--if we wanted to "evolve." At first we just said we were not interested, but soon we were practically being ordered to go, by our classmates as well as our instructors.

말 할 것도 없이, 두달 후에 우리 말고 기초 단계에 있는 사람은 없었다 [우리는 아직 심사를 보지 않았기 때문이다]. 우리는 꼭 이 심사를 봐야 한다는 편지가 왔다. 우리는 그들에게 계속 운동만 하러 왔고 승급이고 뭐에 신경 쓰고 싶지 않는데도 불구 한데 말이다. 수업 마치고 모두 로비에서 녹차를 마시는데 이 만남에서 강압적인 수법이 시작된 것이다. 우리는 계속 여러 세미나에 가야 한다고 요구하는것이다. 이 세미나는 비쌌는데 드디어 “성장” 하기 위해 심성에 가야 한다는 것이었다. 처음에는 관심이 없다고 했는데 금세 요구에서 명령으로 바뀌었다. 수강생들마저 그러기 시작 했다.


The Shim Sung was also ridiculously priced and when I asked what happened there all I was told I'd spend a whole weekend in a hotel with a bunch of other members doing "workshops." But despite my questions they wouldn't tell me much--because somehow it would ruin the "secret." Shim Sung was supposed to "open our hearts." Often during these "green tea meetings" the instructor would take people who had some muscular or back pain into the exercise room. My husband was often called in and was always given a pleasant massage that alleviated pain in his back. We thought this was just part of the program, but soon after he was told that if he wanted more massages in the future--he would have to pay substantial fees.

성은 말도 안되게 비쌌고 가서 뭘 하는지 물었더니 일주일 동안 수강생들과 함께 호텔에서 지내 세미나를 듣는다고 했다. 그런데 질문을 해도 답을 잘 해주지 않았다. “비밀”을 망치기 때문이다. 심성은 우리의 마음을 열어주는 것이다. “녹차모임”에서 강사는 근육통이나 허리 아픈 사람들을 불렀다. 제 남편은 여러 번 불리어 허리를 풀어주는 마사지를 받았었다. 이게 프로그램에 속해 있는 줄 알았는데, 나중에 마사지를 더 받기 위해 돈을 개인적으로 내야 한다는 것이었다.


We also saw how our workouts were quickly becoming "meditation" classes rather than yoga classes. We would maybe warm up for 15-20 minutes and then be told to meditate for another 20 minutes.

그리고 우리는 요가 강의가 금방 명상강의로 바뀌는 것을 보았다. 15-20분간 준비운동 하고 20분 동안 명상하라고 요구 받았다.


Another thing that bothered us was that when we asked our instructor, a young South Korean man, if he missed his family he said emphatically, "I do not and I don't need to seem them." It also appears that he and the other instructor at this suburban center had a very long workday and no days off!

그리고 또 어린 한국 남성인 우리 강사에게 그의 가족을 보고싶지 않냐고 물었더니 그는 “아니오, 그리고 그들을 안 봐도 됩니다”라고 아주 강하게 말했다. 그리고 이 센터에 있는 그와 또 다른 강사는 아주 오래 일을 하고 쉬는 날도 없다는 겁니다!!


All these things made us quit. And once we quit we received calls from one of the instructors claiming that she was very sad and missed us. We actually enjoyed the classes at first, but were so sick of the incessant nagging to participate in other activities outside the class! We suspected it was a "cult," [sic] and finding this page and other accounts helped us to realize that this group was not only problematic for us.

이 모든 것이 우리를 그만두게 했다. 우리가 그만두자 강사 한명이 우리를 전화해 보고 싶다며 섭섭하다고 했다. 우리는 사실 처음에 강의를 즐겼는데, 강의 말고도 다른 일에 참여하라는 잔소리에 지쳤던 것이다. 우리는 그것이 사이비인듯했는데 이 사이트와 다른 사람들의 경험들이 이 단체가 우리에게 말고도 큰 골칫덩이라는 것을 알게 되었다.

Previously I had earned a black belt in Tae Kwon Do so I am familiar with martial arts training and philosophical teachings. But later in life I found Tae Kwon Do a bit too jarring, so some time ago I joined a local Dahn Hak center in California with the hope of getting into better shape.
Initially I enjoyed the stretching and even the meditation. What I found disturbing was the constant up-selling. I had already paid my $1,200.00 fee for a year and went on their $300.00 weekend retreat. And they wanted more money for testing to move up their levels. But this didn't strike me as too odd since I had paid small fees as I moved up within the ranks of Tae Kwon Do years earlier. What disturbed me was when Master Lee came to town everyone was asked to pay another $250.00 to see him for a couple of hours. Then there were suggestions that I pay to go to the Sedona retreat. I started to feel uneasy with the teachers.
저는 태권도에 검은띠가 있어서 무술의 수련과 철학적인 면에 대해서 익숙합니다.그런데 나이가 들면서 태권도가 너무 충격이 커서 얼마 전에 California에 있는 단학 센터에 가입해서 몸을 유지할 생각 이었어요. 처음에는 스트레칭과 명상이 즐거웠어요. 마음에 안드는 것은 항상 뭘 파는 것 이었어요. 이미 일년치인 $1200을 내고 $300이 드는 수련회에도 갔었죠. 그리고 승급을 하기 위해서는 돈을 더 달라는 것 이었죠. 하지만 이것은 제게 이상하지는 않았습니다. 태권도에서도 승급할 때 마다 돈을 조금 받았기 때문이다. 그런데 수상한 것은 Master Lee가 동네에 있는 사람에게 몇 시간씩 보는데 $250을 받았죠. 그런 다음에 Sedona에 있는 수련회에 돈 내고 참여하라는 것 입니다. 그러자 저는 강사들과 좀 불편해지기 시작 했습니다.

I also found all the hugging and repeated "I love you(s)" a bit much. The teachers seemed almost too pleasant and happy.
리고 자꾸 안아주고 반복적으로 “당신을 사랑합니다”하는 것이 좀 너무 했습니다. 강사들이 지나치게 기쁜 것 같아서요.

When you join Dahn Hak the sales pitch is quite good. I joined because I liked a teacher that I met. I became concerned when I noticed what a revolving door the place was for teachers. They don't let any of the teachers stay at any one club too long. You go to class and the teacher you may have grown accustomed to is gone. No explanation, unless you ask. One teacher told me that he had family in Korea, but has little contact with them. He also said he lived with the other teachers. I thought how odd this was. He also constantly asked me about my relationship with my husband who was not a member. They ask about your past and personal life it seems in an effort to gain your trust.
음에 단학을 가입할 때 판매 조건들이 좋아요. 저는 강사가 좋아서 가입을 했는데, 시시때때 없이 선생님들이 바뀌는 것을 보고 걱정이 되었습니다. 어느 한 강사도 한곳에 너무 오래 머무르게 하지 않기 때문이죠. 강의에 가보면 친해진 강사가 가버리는 경우가 있을 수 있죠. 그것에 대한 설명은 물어보지 않으면 없어요. 한 강사는 한국에 가족이 있는데 거의 연락이 없다고 한다. 그리고 그는 다른 강사들과 같이 산다고 하죠. 저는 이것이 조금 이상하다고 생각 했습니다. 그는 항상 저와 가입하지 않은 저의 남편에 관계에 대해서 물어보곤 했어요. 그들이 자신의 과거와 개인적인 생활에 대해서 물어 볼 때 자신의 신뢰를 얻기 위해서인 것 같은 느낌이죠.

It's not only the teachers that are odd. I began to find some of the students were often strange too. So many wanted to be believers that they would say whatever the instructor wanted to hear. I noticed that some students were much more easily influenced than others and that teachers would spend more time with them.
강사만 좀 이상 한게 아닙니다. 수강생들 중에도 이상한 사람들이 있어요. 어떤 사람들은 믿고 싶어서 강사들이 시키는 데로 하는 사람도 있었어요. 어떤 수강생 들은 이에 더 쉽게 넘어가고 강사들이 그들과 시간을 더 많이 지내는 것 같았어요.

After about eight months, my husband would joke with me that Dahn Hak was a "cult" disguised as an exercise program. If I missed a week of classes they would call and say how they missed me. I am normally very suspicious of sales pitches, religious organizations or anything that "sounds too good to be true." This Dahn Hak organization is very good at selling and manipulation. And while I can understand people wanting to reduce their stress in this crazy world of ours, Dahn Hak isn't what it purports itself to be [sic]. I determined that the Dahn Hak method wasn't for me.
8달이 지나고 나서, 제 남편은 단학이 “사이비”가 운동 프로그램으로 변장 한 거라고 농담하곤 했죠. 일주일 수업을 빠지면 그들은 전화해서 보고 싶다고 합니다. 저는 보통 판매 수법, 종교단체나 “듣기에 너무 좋은 것”에 대해 주의가 많은 사람이에요. 이 단학이란 단체는 판매와 조작을 참 잘합니다. 그리고 이 미친 세상에서 자신의 스트레스를 줄이고 싶어하는 사람도 이해가 가지만, 단학은 그들이 주장하는 것과 다릅니다.저는 단학이 저에 맞는 것이 아니라고 결정 했습니다.

When I quit going, they called several times. I finally told them not to call anymore. I didn't give them any explanation. I didn't want to even discuss my reasoning with people that are so obviously immersed in their own cosmic commune.
단학을 그만 둘 때 그들은 여러 번 전화했죠. 저는 결국에 전화를 하지 말라고 했어요. 저는 설명도 하지 않았어요. 저는 자기들의 사회에 그렇게 빠져든 사람과는 전혀 하고 싶지도 않고요.

Finally, I thought maybe I was imagining that the Dahn Hak organization is strange. I feel relieved that I am not the only one that thinks that Dahn Hak is "cultish."
그러자, 단학 단체가 이상하다고 느꼈던 것이 내 상상이 아닐까 하는 생각도 생기구요. 제가 단학이 사이비 같다는 사람이 저 혼자가 아니라서 다행이에요.

About two months ago I saw a sign for a Dahn Center near my house and was interested. I wanted to start doing yoga. When I called to see when the classes were and they said this would require an evaluation first. My evaluation cost $15.00 and revealed my many "blockages." But they said these blockages would go away, by doing their exercises.
두 달 전에 저는 집 근처에 Dahn Center광고를 보고 관심이 있었어요. 저는 요가를 하고 싶었어요. 강의가 언젠지 알아보고 싶어서 전화 했더니 평가가 먼저 필요하대요. 평가하는데 $15이 들었고요, “막힌것”들이 드러 났습니다. 그런데 이것들이 그들의 운동으로 없어진다죠.

Signing up and for a three month plan was $369.00, which seemed very high, but I figured--why not try it out?
세 달치 회원 가입하는데 $396이 들었습니다. 비싸도 한번 해보기로 했죠.

It's now been two months since my plan started and I have never seen such a disorganized organization.
가입한지 2달이 지났는데 저는 이 단체처럼 혼란스러운 곳을 못봤어요.

During the meditation part of the class I have been just laying there relaxing while others go through different "poses." No one ever talks to me about these poses--so I just kind of flail along.
명상하는 동안에는 다른 사람이 이런저런 자세를 취하는 동안에 저는 가만히 누워있습니다. 아무도 이 자세들에 대해서 말을 꺼내지 않습니다. 그래서 저는 그냥 따라하죠.

About two weeks ago, during the meditation, the master came over and told me to get my legs in the air, which was pretty uncomfortable after awhile. What was this all about? And when I asked how to do these poses, he acted shocked that I hadn't been shown. Duh!
2주정도 전에 명상시간에, Master가 지나면서 다리를 띄우라는 것이에요. 시간이 지나니 볼편했죠. 이게 다 무슨 의미입니까? 자세들을 어떻게 하냐고 물었더니 시범을 아직 안 봤다는 말에 충격이 가했죠. 당연한 거 아니에요?

Anyway, an appointment was set up with him to learn the proper poses.
어쨌든 자세를 제대로 가르쳐주기 위해 따로 시간을 냈죠.

After that appointment he said I needed one-on-one classes with him once a week, which would supposedly benefit me greatly.
그런 후에 1주일에 한번 1대1 강의가 필요하다면서, 저에게 아주 좋을 거라고 그러셨죠.

You must understand that I am just paraphrasing because it's so hard to understand a word he says! But when asked if this was included in my three month membership, he said, "No." This would be an additional $100.00 a session. After my jaw dropped I said I can't afford that. He replied, "What about $80?" Well, I claimed that I needed the weekend to think about it, but that was a crock. I have no intention of taking those classes.
그가 무슨 말 하는지 이해하기 너무 힘들어서 대충 뜻만 전하고 있다는 것을 이해 하셔야 합니다! 이 강의가 회원가입에 포함이 된 것인지 물었더니 그는 아니라며, 강의당 $100이 든다고 하네요. 제 입이 딱 벌어지고 나서 저는 돈이 없어서 못한다고 그랬어요. 그러더니 “80불은 어때요?” 라고 물었어요. 그래서 저는 주말을 거쳐서 생각 한다고 했죠. 물론 그것은 거짓말이었죠. 그 강의를 할 마음이 전혀 없었습니다.

This obvious ploy to get more money totally turned me off.
돈을 더 받기 위해 이런 수법을 쓰는게 정말로 마음에 안들었습니다.

When I was leaving one class another was ending and the master of that class asked me to stay and have some tea. I explained that I couldn't stay, but she said she wanted to advise me that from now on everyone had to dress the same in class. That was the last straw. Even after paying $369.00, you can't wear what you want?
수업을 나가는 한 날에는 (master)가 녹차 마시자고 제게 물었어요. 저는 그럴수 없다고 하니 그녀는 이제부터는 모두가 같은 복장을 해야 한다고 충고했죠. 더 이상은 참을 수가 없었습니다. $396불을 내고 나서도 입고 싶은 것도 못입는단 말인가?


I am extremely disillusioned.
아주 환멸합니다.

I have been sick with heart disease and undertaken my recovery in part through yoga, walking, swimming and this has worked out well.
저는 심장병이 있는데, 일부는 요가, 걷기, 수영을 통해 아주 좋은 결과가 나놨어요.

My husband and I received a number of brochures at our door from a neighborhood Dahn school and thought it might be nice walking to classes nearby to study Tai Chi. Such exercises would be much gentler than the Tae Kwon Do, which I had once pursued in the past. So I called the school and asked about their classes.
저와 제 남편은 근처에 있는 단 학교에 광고를 여러 번 받았는데, 태극권을 배우기 위해 강의로 걷는것도 괜찮을 거라 생각이 들었어요. 이런 운동이 전에 했던 태권도 보다 무리가 덜 가기 때문이죠. 그래서 저는 강의에 대해서 묻기 위해 전화 했어요.

When I visited there an attractive young woman insisted my husband and I sign up for two introductory assessments at $20.00 each.
거기에 방문 했더니 매력 있는 여성분이 저와 제 남편을 소개 강의에 등록하라고 그랬죠.

When we arrived for our scheduled assessments she led us through some basic exercises. Then proceeded to have us lie down on the floor on our backs while she poked our abdomens and chests, giving us a routine "Meridian and Ki" exam. She then said that we were not well, emphasizing that there was something very wrong with my intestines, much to my surprise and that our energy was also blocked. She told us that we would need to sign up for at least a year.
강의에 참여할 때 그녀는 기초적인 운동을 지도했어요. 그런 후에 바닥에 눕혀놓고 배, 가슴을 찌르면서 기 측정 검사를 했어요. 그녀는 우리의 상태가 좋지 않다며 위장에 큰 문제가 있고 기가 막혀 있다는 것입니다. 또 우리는 적어도 일년 동안 가입을 해야 될 거라는 것입니다.

What began as an opportunity to find out about the school suddenly turned into a high pressure negotiation about how much money we should spend. She emphasized that I was very sick, using my history of heart attacks to play on my worries, and then suggesting that I must not want to get well if I didn't want to spend a thousand dollars immediately.
이 학교에 대해서 배우기 위해 온 것이 갑자기 돈을 얼마나 쓸지 하는 강압적인 논쟁으로 변했어요. 그녀는 제가 아주 아프다면서 제 심장병을 이용해서 $1000을 쓸 마음이 없는 거 보니 낳고 싶지 않는 모양이라고 그랬어요.

We told her that we would like to think about it over the weekend and then she began to act very sad saying, "But we need the money now, it's the end of the month." It was indeed the 31st and my husband and I felt bad for this young woman who seemed responsible for this tiny school. So we gave her our credit card and she charged up $270.00 (i.e. $130.00 for my first month, $100.00 for my husband and $40.00 for our first session) and advised that we would have to come a lot more and should stay and wait for the masters to give me exercises to do. But I won't be attending any more of these classes.
우리는 주말을 통해 생각 해본다 그러더니 아주 슬프듯이 행동을 하면서 “그런데 지금 돈이 필요해요, 월말이잖아요”라고 그랬어요. 정말로 31일이다 보니 제 남편과 저는 이 작은 학교를 책임 지는 거 같은 그녀가 불쌍해서 카드를 주면서 그녀는 $270을 빼갔어요.(제 한 달치 $130 남편 한 달치 $100 그리고 소개 강의 $40) 그리고 자주오라면서 강의 끝나고 (Master)들이 운동을 가르쳐 주는 것도 따라 하라고 그랬죠. 그런데 저는 이 강의를 더 참여하지 않을 겁니다.
