대담자(해리 크라이슬러, Harry Kreisler): 이 인터뷰를 준비하면서 정치와 과학에 관한 당신(리처드 르원틴, Richard Lewontin, 하버드대 생물학과 연구교수)의 글 몇가지를 읽었습니다. 나는 전문가는 아니지만 충격을 받았습니다. 당신의 과학은 당신의 분석법을 알려주더군요. 말하자면 뒤에 있는 이론이 아니라 이 분석법이 당신으로 하여금 쟁점들을 명료화하는 걸 돕는다고 할 수 있을 겁니다. 왜 그런고 하니, 내가 읽어본 여러개의 논문에서 당신은 논쟁의 양쪽을 모두 비판하는 듯 하더군요.

리처드 르원틴: (생략)... 예를 들어 이른바 유전자 조작 농산물에 대한 투쟁이 있습니다. 지금, 이 기술에 반대할 이유는 수없이 많을 겁니다. 내가 여기에 반대하는 한에서, 건강 위험은 관련이 없습니다. 증거가 없거든요. 그리고, 그런데, 정치적 쟁점에 관해 내가 취하고 싶은 태도에 도움이 될 글들을 쓰고 주장을 펴는 사람들을 보면, 자신이 과학자라는 걸 이용하고 유사 과학적 주장을 이용해서 결국 거짓말이 될 소리를 합니다.

이 이야기는 꼭 해야겠는데, 유전자 조작 문제를 생각하면서 이 분야에서 아주 중요한 여성 작가인 반다나 시바의 책을 읽었습니다. 그는 물리학 박사니 과학자입니다. 구체적인 예를 한가지 들겠습니다. 내가 읽은 어떤 글에서 시바는 이렇게 말했습니다. “어린이들이 유아식을 먹을 때 성인 여성이 피임약을 먹을 때 흡수하는 에스트로겐 양의 8배에 달하는 에스트로겐을 섭취하는 걸 인식하십니까?” 나는 이렇게 생각했습니다. “맙소사! 어린 아이가 성인 여성이 피임약을 먹을 때의 8배나 되는 에스트로겐을 섭취하다니... 얼마나 끔찍한가.” 그래서 그가 인용한 논문을 찾아봤습니다. 글쎄, 사실이었습니다. 어떤 걸 8배나 섭취하고 있었습니다. 그런데 그게 생리학적으로 활성 상태가 아닌 에스트로겐인 것으로 드러났습니다. 그 에스트로겐은 생리학적 활동력이 1000분의 1에 불과했던 겁니다. 식물성 에스트로겐(plant estrogen)이라고 하는 겁니다. 시바는 ‘에스트로겐’이라는 단어를 가지고 장난친 겁니다. 이제, 그는 이 문제에 대한 진실을 알아야 합니다. 자신이 자료를 인용한 바로 그 논문이기 때문입니다. 추측하건대 더 큰 선을 위해서 이를, 저는 이를 의도적인 왜곡이라고 부를 텐데 그는 다르게 말할 수도 있겠지만, 정당화할 수 있다고 여길지도 모르겠습니다. 저는 이런 걸 용인해서는 안된다고 생각합니다. 왜냐면 결국에는 사람들이 이를 눈치챌 것이고 그렇게 되면 냉소적이 될 것입니다. 그리고 역효과를 낳을 겁니다. [Interviewer] In preparation for this interview, I read some of your papers about politics and science. I was struck that -- I'm not an expert on this -- but your science informs the way you do your analysis. It's not the theory behind it, so to speak, but rather, it helps you bring clarity to some of the issues, because in a number of the papers that I looked at, you seemed to be faulting both sides of the debate.

For example, there's a struggle about so-called genetically manipulated organisms, or GM foods and so on. Now, one might have a number of reasons for opposing that particular technology. To the extent that I oppose it, it has nothing to do with dangers to health, of which there is no evidence. And, yet, I see people writing, making claims which might support the public position I want to take on a political issue, but using pseudo-scientific claims and their own legitimacy as scientists to tell what come to be lies. I have to tell you, when I was thinking about the GM food thing, I read the works of a woman, Vandana Shiva, who's an extremely important writer in this field, who has a Ph.D. in physics, so she's a scientist. And I'll give you a specific example. One thing I read, Shiva said: "Do you realize that when children, infants, eat baby food, they're getting eight times the dose of estrogen that a woman gets when she takes her contraceptive pill?" And I thought, "My God! How terrible, that a little baby will get eight times the dose of estrogen that an adult woman gets when she takes a contraceptive pill!" So I went to look at the paper she cited. Well, yes, it's true, they are getting eight times the dose of a thing, but it turns out not to be physiologically active estrogen. It turns out to have only one one-thousandth of the physiological activity that estrogen has. It's a thing called a plant estrogen. She played on the word "estrogen." Now, she must have known the truth in the matter, because she cited the paper from which she got the data. She would presumably regard that as a justifiable -- I would call it a deliberate distortion; she would say something else -- in the interest of the greater good. I think we cannot put up with that, because in the end it will be detected, it will make people cynical, and it will be counterproductive.
