You know daddy, I thingk the most important quality for any person to have is imagination. It makes people able to put themselves in other people's places. It makes them kind and sympathetic and understanding. It should be taught to children. But John Greier Home instantly crushed the smallest form of imagination that appeared. Duty was the only quality that was encouraged. I don't think children should know the meaning of this word; it is horrible and hateful. They should do everything from love. 

Let me tell you about the orphan asylum that I'm going to be in charge of! It is my favorite thing to imagine before I go to sleep. I plan out every small detail - the meals and clothes and study and amusements and punishments; even my elder orphans sometimes bad.

있잖아요 아저씨, 상상력은 누구에게든지 가장 중요한 점이라고 생각해요. 상상력은 다른 사람의 입장에서 생각하게 해 주거든요. 그렇게 해서 사람들은 친절한 마음, 동정심, 그리고 이해심을 가질 수 있게 되는 거죠. 아이들에게 꼭 가르쳐 줘야 해요. 하지만 존 그리에 고아원에서는 상상력이 나타날 아주 작은 여지만 보여도 바로 뭉개버려요. 오직 의무만을 강요하죠. 아이들은 그런 말뜻은 몰라야 해요. 끔찍하고 혐오스러워요. 

제가 원장인 고아원에 대해서 얘기해 드릴게요! 잠들기 전에 상상하기 가장 좋아하는 일이예요. 작은 부분들도 다 생각해 두었어요. 음식, 옷, 공부하고 놀거리, 또 처벌에 대해서도요. 저보다 나이 많은 고아들도 어쩔 때는 나쁜 행동을 하거든요.
