Wild Geese

You do not have to be good. 
You do not have to walk on your knees 
for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting. 
You only have to let the soft animal of your body 
love what it loves. 
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine. 
Meanwhile the world goes on. 
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain 
are moving across the landscapes, 
over the prairies and the deep trees, 
the mountains and the rivers. 
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air, 
are heading home again. 
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, 
the world offers itself to your imagination, 
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting--
over and over announcing your place 
in the family of things.

무릎으로 기어다니지 않아도 돼.

사막건너 백 마일, 후회 따윈 없어.

몸 속에 사는 부드러운 동물,

사랑하는 것을 그냥 사랑하게 내버려두면 돼.

절망을 말해보렴, 너의. 그럼 나의 절망을 말할테니.

그러면 세계는 굴러가는 거야.

그러면 태양과 비의 맑은 자갈들은

풍경을 가로질러 움직이는 거야.

대초원들과 깊은 숲들,

산들과 강들 너머까지.

그러면 기러기들, 맑고 푸른 공기 드높이,

다시 집으로 날아가는 거야.

네가 누구든, 얼마나 외롭든,

너응 상상하는 대로 세계를 볼 수 있어,

기러기들, 너를 소리쳐 부르잖아, 꽥꽥거리며 달뜬 목소리로-

네가 있어야할 곳은 이 세상 모든 것들

그 한가운데라고.
