이 글은 내(굼벵이)가 실제로 겪은 일을 시간 순으로 쓴 것이다. 이글은 대화를 목적으로 쓴 것이며, informal 하기 때문에 이메일 등에도 쓸 수 있다. 1명의 미국인 tutor한테서 교정을 받은 것이지만, 아직 글을 좀 더 다듬어야 한다. (영어로) 글을 쓸 때 흔히 APA style 에 따르는게 기본이지만, 글씨체 정도만 따르기로 한다. Times Roman, 12pt, double space, etc.
Let me tell you what happend on my trip in Mexico last winter. I went on a trip from San Francisco to Cancun in a tour bus with 30 americans and I was the only asian. A travel agency organized a tour and we could sleep in the bus. After crossing the border, we traveled some cities; Guanajuato, Oaxaca, Chiapas, something like that. After 2 weeks, I had an accident in Chiapas. I climbed a big trunk of a dead tree and fell almost 20ft. One bone of my spine was broken also two intervertebral discs were broken. In Chiapas, I had to be admitted to the hospital where I was examined by a neurologist. Two people from my tour group stayed with me until I left Chiapas. After I called my insurance, an ambulance came to take me to the airport, where I was transported on a small plane called an 'air ambulance'. ...... After the accident I had an operation on my back and I was hospitalized for 18 days in Mexico City. Then I went back to Korea and I had to be hospitalized for 3 more months. At first I couldn't walk well because I received nerve damage to my back that effected my bladder. That's why I can't feel when I need to go to the bathroom. I always need to use a catheter to drain urine. Also I usually get tired so easily. The therapist, however, told me that I could have been paralyzed, so I'm very lucky.
After hospitalization in Korea I came back to the U.S to study more. But I wasn't recovered yet. My doctor told me that he was not sure when I could get sensation in my bladder and the area around it.
I'm still recovering. And I think that I'm blessed. Because I believe that when people ask God to give them strength, God gives them weakness to humble them.

life flight : 미국에서 인명구조용으로 쓰이는 헬기(helicopter)를 말하는데, 내가 탔던 Air ambulance는 헬기가 아닌 경비행기였다. Air ambulance는 International SOS라는 회사에서 유학생 보험회사와 계약을 맺고 제공하는 국경없는 서비스이다. 비용은 선불이며, 멕시코에서 한국까지 오려면 7천만원~1억원 정도 든다.(정확한 액수를 잊었다) 내 경우, 치아파스(Chiapas, Mexico)에서 멕시코 시티(멕시코 수도)로 가는데만 US$25,000정도 들었다. 미국으로 가는데는 US$50,000정도. 좀 더 설명하자면, 환자는 보험회사 또는 보험회사에서 알려준 전화번로로 전화해서 Air ambulance 서비스 이용에 대한 의사표시를 하고나서 돈을 입금해야 한다. 돈을 입금한 뒤에 마음이 바뀌어서 즉시 계약을 해지하려고 해도 20%정도를 수수료로 내야하고, 모든 준비-비행기, 의사, 앰뷸런스 등-가 끝난 상태에서 해지하려면 상당한 돈을 수수료로 내야한다. 중요한 것은, 말이 안 통하는 외국에서 수술 또는 치료를 받아야 하는 환자가 스스로를 돌봐야 한다는 점이다. 이게 말이 안 되는 것 같지만, 현실은 그렇다. 예를 들어서, Air ambulance서비스를 이용해서 멕시코 시티에 있는 병원까지는 갔지만, 실제로 돈을 지불해야만 병실도 얻고, MRI를 찍어보는 등의 조치를 받을 수 있기 때문에 응급실에서 몇 시간을 기다려야만 했다. 막연하게 보험회사에서 알아서 처리했을 것이라는 짐작만으로 기다라고 있었던 것이다. 보험회사에서는 어느 병원으로 가라는 안내(?)만 International SOS팀에 해줬을 뿐이다. 가지고 있던 신용카드로 250만원정도를 선불로 낸 다음에야 적절한 조치를 받을 수 있었다. 참고로, 그 병원은 멕시코에서 가장 비싼 병원가운데 하나였다. 하루 입원비가 100만원정도하는 상상을 초월하는 고급 병원이었다. 보험회사에서 왜 그 병원을 지정했는지는 아직도 잘 모르겠지만, 아마도 Air ambulance를 이용했기 때문에 환자의 재정상태를 '재벌' 수준이라고 받아들인것 같다. 결론부터 말하면, 그 곳에서 수술 및 재활치료때문에 18일을 입원했었는데, 몇 차례에 걸쳐서 돈 내놓으라는 협박에 시달려야 했다. 돈 안내면 쫓아낸다는 둥, 감옥에 보낸다는 둥, 수술 받고나서 꿈쩍도 못하는 환자한테 그런말 하는 일을 직업으로 가진 사람 심정이야 오죽 했겠으랴만(그 사람이 그 병원에서 영어를 두번째로 잘 하더라. 그냥 못 알아 듣는척 했어야 하는건데, 쯔쯧), 당하는(?) 내 입장은 말로 할 수 있는 것이 아니었다. 움직일수만 있으면 기어서라도 나가겠다는 생각을 수없이 되낼수밖에 없었다. 달리 할 수 있는게 없었다. 멕시코 주재 한국 영사관에 근무하시는 잘 생긴 영사님 한 분과 그 영사님 부탁으로 병원비 협상을 마무리 짓기 위해 새벽녘까지 그들과 신경전을 벌이신 미모의^^ 젊은 한국인 여성 변호사분이 없었더라면, 현행범으로 멕시코 감옥에 갔을지도 모른다. 그 분들께는 늘 고마운 마음이다. 특히, 단지 한국 사람이라는 이유만으로 무료로 상담 및 병원비 협상, 휴대폰으로 국제전화까지 쓰게 해주신 그 변호사님께는 어떻게든 사례를 해드리고 싶었지만, 두 분다 완강히 거절하셔서 마음에 빚으로 남아버렸다. 한국에서 병원에 머무르는 동안 전화 한 통 한 것이 전부다. 전화라도 가끔 드려야 하는데, 두분다 워낙 바쁘시고 시간 맞추기도 힘들다는 핑계로 그냥 저냥 잊고 지내는게 못내 죄스럽다.
이쯤에서, 어른들이 궁금해하는 부분을 정리해보면 아래와 같다. 병원에서 요구한 금액 US$38,500, 의사 몫으로 요구한 금액 US$10,000 (Air ambulance는 별도) 내 가족이 지불한 총액은 저 둘을 합한 금액에서 30% 정도 깎은 만큼이다. 무슨 병원비가 저렇게나 많이 나왔는지, 어떻게 그걸 깎았는지 궁금해 할 사람도 있겠지만, 솔직히 나도 잘 모르겠다. 병원비야 그 병원이 워낙에 비싸게 받기로 악명높기 때문에 그렇다 치더라도, 쉽사리 수긍할 수 없는 액수인 건 분명하다. 예를 들어서, 부러진 허리뼈 대신 집어넣은 Titanium Cage(Pyramesh)도 한국에서 받는 비용의 두 배 정도 청구한 것 같다. 어쨌든, 그런 거품을 뺄 만큼 깎은 것 같기는 하다. 한국에 있던 여자친구가 멕시코 영사관에 이메일과 팩스로 도움을 청해서 영사 한 분이 직접 병원으로 오셨고, 그들과 직접 병원비 협상을 하지는 못하셨지만, 결국 도와줄만한 분을 찾은 결과 그나마 돈을 덜 뜯겼다. 똑똑한 여자친구 덕에 (멕시코까지 직접 와서 나를 챙겨서) 한국까지 무사히 돌아온 건 지금 생각해도 꿈만 같다. 사랑해요, 보고 싶어요~
음... 보험회사에서 나온 돈은 총 3천만원(의료비 2천만원, 응급 수송비 1천만원) 이었는데, 보험회사 미국본부에서 보험금 지급을 한국 지부로 넘겼기 때문에 환율 덕을 조금 봤다. 무난하게 살아온 내 인생에서 이보다 더한 경험이 앞으로 있을까 싶을 정도로 큰 일을 겪었지만, 꼭 좋다 나쁘다로 말할수는 없을 것 같다. 한 가지 짚고 넘어갈 것은, 유학생 보험은 무조건 1억정도 나오는 걸로 들어야 한다는 거다. 그 정도 들려면 적어도 50-70만원 이상 들겠지만, 만약을 생각해서 들어두는게 좋을 것 같다. 내가 들었던 건 20만원정도 하는 거였는데......
어쨌든 원점으로 돌아와서, 미국인들은 life flight라는 말은 알아 듣지만 Air ambulance라는 말은 못 알아 듣는다. 평소에 쓰는 말이 아니기 때문이다. 그래서 a small plane called an 'air ambulance' 라고 말해야 대충 알아 듣는다. 굳이 달리 표현하자면, a small plane used for emergencies 라고 할 수도 있는데, 아무래도 없는 말을 만들다 보니 알아 듣지 못할 가능성이 높다.

유학생 보험을 갖고 있는 사람은 보험약관과 청약서를 꼭 챙겨서 다녀야 한다. 보통 약관은 한글과 영문이 합쳐진 조그만 책자를 받게 될 것이고, 그 책자에 보험금 청구에 필요한 서류가 첨부되어 있기도 하다. 보통 보험금 청구에서 지급까지는 3일정도 걸리며, 필요한 서류는 서너가지이고, 절차도 그다지 까다롭지 않다. 미리 충분히 숙지해 둔다면, 응급 상황에서 당황하거나 허둥대지 않고 차분하게 처리할 수 있을 것이다. 내 경우, 보험 회사에 사고 사실을 알린 순간부터 돈을 받기까지 보름쯤 걸렸는데, 필요한 서류를 늦게 보냈기 때문이다. 물론 이 모든 일은 한국에 있던 여자 친구가 도맡아했다. 영어회화는 고급 수준, 스페인어도 조금 할 줄 알았기 때문에 가능했다는 생각이 든다. 음~ '아는 것이 힘이다'라는 말은 이런 경우를 두고 하는 말 같다. 솔직히 나는 그 당시에 발 네개 달린 보조기 없이는 움직이기도 힘든 상황이었고, 혼자서 병실에 있다보니 외로움과 향수병, 병원비 걱정 등으로 몹쓸 생각도 많이 했더랬다. 15층 정도되는 큰 병원에 온통 1인실만 있었고, 내가 있던 병실이 가장 싼 일반 병실이었다. 그러니 돈 많아 보이는 사람들도 길어야 수술 후 1주일이면 서둘러 퇴원을 했더랬다. 가끔 간호사들이 와서 방광에 연결된 소변통을 비우고, 하루에 한 번씩 침대보를 갈고, 조금 움직일 수 있게 됐을 때부터는 샤워실에 약간 특수한 의자를 가져다 놓고 그 위에 나를 앉힌 다음 씻겨주기도 했다. 마치 갓난아이가 된 것 같은 느낌, 정말 많이 좌절해야만 했다. 소변은 물론이고 대변도 볼 수가 없어서 관장약을 항문으로 넣었지만, 약효가 쎈 걸 넣으면 병실 바닥에 토끼통처럼 동그란 것들이 줄줄 흘렀고, 약효가 좀 약한 건 묵묵부답이었다. 결국 수술 후 12일쯤 됐을때, 배가 너무 아파서 손가락으로 대변을 파내야 했다. 처음부터 수술용 고무장갑을 끼었더라면 좀 더 나았을텐데, 급한 마음에 하다보니 피를 봤다. 신기하게도 인간의 몸이란게 그 정도는 저절로 낫는 모양이더라. 그곳에서의 즐거움이란 생선 요리 먹는것과 TV보는것, 그리고 수술 담당했던 신경외과의사를 보는 것이었다. 그는 그 병원에서 내가 만나 본 사람가운데 영어를 가장 잘 했다. 거의 미국인 수준이었고, 나중에 미국에 왔을때 그가 써준 Medical Report를 보여주면 어떤 상황에서도 간단하게 내가 원하는 걸 설명할 수 있을 정도로 훌륭했다. 그는하루에 한 번 정도 회진했으며, 놀랍게도 수술 후 5일쯤 됐을때부터 본격적인 물리치료를 시켰다. 보조기없이 러닝머신에서 걷고, 계단 10칸 정도 오르내리고, 엉덩이쪽에 전기 자극을 주는 치료같은것 말이다.
