Time your purchase for top savings.
New ranges, refrigerators, and other big-ticket items hit the showrooms in September and October, and last year's models go on sale to make room for the fresh arrivals. Major sales are also common after the winter holidays.
Consider ordering online. Though typically you can't buy large appliances ditectly from manufacturers, some companies such as General Electric allow you to order by credit card via a secure Web site. You click on a dealer (either a chain or an independent) and specify pickup or delivery. The price is set by that dealer. For small appliances, first consider Amazon.com. No store came close to offering its price, variety, and quality.

The scenario: "Do you recommend an extended warranty for a gas range?" our reporter asked. A salesman said: "People come back here all the time with their faces down, wishing they had. You get only one-year coverage from the manufacturer, and that only applies to defects. We cover everything. Plus, we come to your house once a year to inspect your range."
Reality check: Standard warranties are indeed getting skimpier(hardly adequate). But the odds of your gas range breaking within the first three years is only 19 percent. When a breakdown occurred, readers we surveyed paid an average repair cost of $150 vs. $108 for the extended warranty. Ranges require minimal maintenance.
2. 'These break all the time.'
Store: Best Buy.
Product: Side-by-side refrigerator.
The scenario: When our reporter was on the fence about spending $150 on a three-year protection plan for a $1,500 refrigerator, the saleswoman went to work. "You see these electronic controls?" she said of digital touchpads on the door. "This is new technology, and these things can go at any time. You never know when it's going to happen."
Reality check: Most refrigerators incorporate electronic controls. The product failure rate within three years ranges from 8 to 28 percent. Breakdowns probably have less to do with electronics than with whether a model has an icemaker. Side-by-side models that broke cost $150 on average to repair, close to the cost of the warranty.
3.'I can't vouch for imports.'
Store: Lowe's.
Product: Dishwasher.
The scenario: "The quality isn't there anymore," a salesman told our reporter in a dual-edged pitch to sell a pricey, feature-laden dishwasher- and an extended warranty, just in case. "Manufacturers are cutting corners. Everything is being made in Mexico, and God only knows what they're doing down there."
Reality check: Only 13 percent of three-year-old dishwashers that readers have told us about in annual reliability surveys have been repaired. CONSUMER REPORTS has no data on whether dishwashers, or any other large or small appliances, are more or less reliable depending on the country where they are assembled.

EXTENDED-WARRANTY HOOEY
여기서 hooey는 '허튼 소리(nonsense)' 또는 '바보 같은!'을 뜻한다. 우리나라에서는 아직까지도 품질보증기간을 연장하는 문서(계약)를 판매하는 문화가 없지만, 미국 소비자들은 작년 한 해동안 $16 billion(160억 달러, 15조 4368억원, 원달러 환율 964.80) 을 이 '보증기간 연장'에 쓸 정도로 이미 큰 시장을 형성하고 있다.
우리나라 기업들이 내수 시장에서 언제쯤 이런 마케팅 전략을 택할지 모르겠지만, 냉장고 팔때 기본적으로 포함되는 1년짜리 품질보증서옆에 2년 혹은 3년 짜리 품질보증서를 놔두고 몇 만원에서 몇 십 만원씩 받고 판다는 소린데, 글쎄...... 우리나라에서 이런 조사(소비자 만족도 및 실제로 지출한 수리 비용 조사)를 하면 어떤 결과가 나올지 궁금하다. 아마도 이렇게 하면 제조사가 손해를 보지 않을까? 특히 자주 고장난다는 드럼세탁기 문짝의 경우라면, 3년 혹은 5년 짜리 품질보증서에 꽤 많은 돈을 들이더라도 소비자가 더 이득일 것 같다.
그나저나, 품질보증기간안에 고장날 확률이 20%정도 밖에 안되는 가전제품들 살 때, 무작정(?) extended warranty를 구입하는 미국 소비자들이 많다고 하니, 이거 바보들 아니냐고? 글쎄, 한마디로 말하기는 힘들 것 같다. 이곳에서 생활하는 동안 반품/환불/교환 때문에 고민해 본 적이 한 번도 없다면 좀 이해가 갈까?
흠.......
어쨌든 Extended-Warranty에 많은 돈을 쓰는 것은 (일부 예외적인 경우를 제외하면) 어리석은 짓임에 틀림없다.
Retailers want you to buy extended warranties, or service plans, because they're cash cows.
Stores keep 50 percent or more of what they charge for warranties. That's more than they make selling actual products.
"You sell a $400 television st and maybe make $10," Eric Arnum, editor of Warranty Week, a trade newsletter, says of retailers. "But you sell a $100 warranty and make $50."
For the consumer, however, extended warranties are notoriously bad deals because products seldom break within the extended-warranty window (typically three years), and when they do, the repair often isn't much more than the cost of the warranty, our data show. We have long advised against them. (The only exceptions we make are for treadmills, which require a house callto fix and are pricey, and some expensive, new-technology TVs because we don't yet have enough information to judge their reliability.)
Still, consumers spent $16 billion last year on extended warranties, and hardball sales tactics flourish. Don't be fooled by these lines our reporter heard in various stores.
여기에 나오는 표현가운데, 'The only exceptions we make are' 를 보면 우리가 평소에 하는 말과 비슷함을 알 수 있다. "몇 가지 예외가 있는데......", "철수(영희)가 뭐라고 했냐면......", "그 사람 진짜 문제 많아, 회사에서 어떤 줄 알아......", 등등. 우리도 가끔씩 "예를 들어서......"라는 표현을 쓰지만, 꼭 그 말만을 쓰는 것은 아니다. 영어에서도 마찬가지로 드물게 "For example......"이라고 말하지만, 자주 들을 수 있는 건 아니다.
우리는 중학교 3년, 고등학교 3년 동안 영어를 배웠는데도, 이런 경우에 생각하는게 'for example' 밖에 없다. 실제 대화에서는 거의 쓰이지 않고 글 쓸때 주로 쓰이는 표현, 이런 걸 영어로 바꿔서 생각하는 훈련이 필요하다고 생각한다. 영어로 좀 더 잘 말하기 위해서.
저번에 썼던 글(I'm blessed.)에도 비슷한 예가 있었다.

영어를 모국어로 쓰는 사람들은 '이런 표현'-that, which등이 생략된 것-을 매우 즐겨 쓴다. 몇 달 동안은 당황스럽지만, 금방 익숙해진다. 문제는 그들과 함께 생활할 수 없는 환경에서 영어를 '공부'할 때, 이런 것들이 부담을 가중시킨다는 거다. 발음을 제외하면, 실제로 가장 까다로운 부분가운데 하나라고 생각한다. 물론, 문법 공부를 열심히 한 사람들에게는 아무것도 아니겠지만, 정작 문제는 실제 대화에서 이런 표현을 쓰기까지 꽤 시간이 걸린다는 거다. 미국 사람들과 자주 어울린다 하더라도, 석달은 걸리는 것 같다. .
한국 사람들끼리 어울리면서 늘 한국말을 쓰는 사람들을 미국에 있는 어학원에서 자주 볼 수 있는데, 이런 경우 '영어로 말하는 능력'을 키우는 건 참 어렵다고 생각한다.
