2004년 여름, 부시가 다시 한 번 대통령을 해먹겠다고 후보로 나온 공화당 전당대회에 대규모 시위가 있었고 독립 미디어 활동가들 역시 미디어 투쟁을 벌였다. 그 중의 하나가 Institute for Applied Autonomy(IAA)의 기술 활동가들이 개발한 TXTmob.com 이었다.

이것은 한마디로 집회/시위에 참가하거나 다양하게 지원하는 사람들 간의 즉각적이고 분산적인 현장 소통을 위한 문자 메시지의 활용을 돕는 시스템이다. 이것이 당시 어떻게 활용되었는지에  대해서는 미디어운동 연구저널(웹진) ACT! 2004년 9월호, "부시안돼! : 최첨단 독립 미디어의 총집결 " 중 '문자메시지로 소통하라' 부분에 대략 나와 있다. 그런데 올해 3월, 이 TXTmob의 코드를 만든 태드 허쉬(Tad Hirsch)가 뉴욕시로부터 기소를 당하는 일이 있었다.

• 기소의 이유와 내용

당시 시위에서 체포된 수백 명의 사람들에 대한 재판이 이루어지는 상황에서, TXTmob을 통해 문자 메시지를 보내고 받은 사람이 누구인지를 식별하기 위해 그 방대한 양의 메시지들을 넘겨받기 위해서...
허쉬의 답: 소환장이 발부된 그 자료들은 더 이상 존재하지도 않고, 자신에게 그것을 비밀로 할 권리도 있다...

• 관련 소송

뉴욕시를 상대로 한 62개의 집단 소송과 관련: arrests during the convention and have been consolidated in Federal District Court in Manhattan. About 1,800 people were arrested and charged, but 90 percent of them ultimately walked away from court without pleading guilty or being convicted.
Many people complained that they were arrested unjustly, and a State Supreme Court justice chastised the city after hundreds of people were held by the police for more than 24 hours without a hearing.

While preparing for the 2004 political conventions in New York and Boston, some demonstrators decided to plan decentralized protests in which small, mobile groups held rallies and roamed the streets.
도시 전체를 반역의 극장으로: “The idea was to create a very dynamic, fluid environment,” Mr. Hirsch said. “We wanted to transform areas around the entire city into theaters of dissent.”
이를 위한 커뮤니케이션 수단으로서의 TXTmob... Organizers wanted to enable people in different areas to spread word of what they were seeing in each spot and to coordinate their movements.

• 코딩 (TXTmob code)

2주 정도 걸려서 코딩함. 보스톤에서는 시험적 운영; 그 후 뉴욕에서 광범위하게 활용 - 수 백명의 사람들이 TXTmob 사이트에 방문하고, 무료로 이용자그룹에 가입하여 사용함.

• 활용; 사용의 예

As a result, when members of the War Resisters League were arrested after starting to march up Broadway, or when Republican delegates attended a performance of “The Lion King” on West 42nd Street, a server under a desk in Cambridge, Mass., transmitted messages detailing the action, often while scenes on the streets were still unfolding.

demonstrators urging each other on and even by people in far-flung cities who simply wanted to trade thoughts or opinions with those on the streets of New York.
기자들도 속보를 얻기 위해, 시위대가 모이는 곳이 어디인지를 알기 위해 메시지를 모니터하기도 했음...
허쉬(Hirsch)에 따르면, 경찰관 역시 메시지를 받았다고...

• 메시지를 받은 사람이 누구인가?

사실상 알기는 힘든데...
경찰은 이미 감시활동을 통해 공화당전당대회(RNC)가 있기 적어도 한 달 전에 TXTmob에 대해 인지하고 있었다는 것... an examination of police surveillance documents prepared in 2003 and 2004, and unsealed by a federal magistrate last year, makes it clear that the authorities were aware of TXTmob at least a month before the Republican convention began.

A document marked “N.Y.P.D. SECRET” and dated July 26, 2004, included the address of the TXTmob Web site and stated, “It is anticipated that text messaging is one of several different communications systems that will be utilized to organize the upcoming RNC protests.”

심지어 다른 나라에는 오마바가 가고 하는데, 여기는 부시를 환영하다니...  하여간, 부시 맞이 촛불집회를 미처 참여하지 못했는데, 촛불 집회/시위에 대한 탄압이 갈때까지 가는 모양이다. 그러면서 지난 몆 주 동안의 촛불 집회/시위에서도 느끼고, 분산적인 시위 방식에 대한 토론이 다음 아고라 등에서 많이 되는 것을 보면서,  TXTmob 사례가 떠올라 정리해보았다.

(올해도 미국에서 대선을 앞두고 전당대회가 있고 물론 대규모 시위도 조직되고 있는 모양인데, 또 다른 선수들이 모바일 문자와 함께 웹2.0으로 분류될 만한 서비스들을 결합한 거리 시위를 지원하는 시스템을 만들고 있다고 하는데...)
