System Of A Down, <Mezmerize>

Rage Against The Machine(이하 RATM)과 더불어 "급진적인 밴드"로 알려진 System Of A Down(이하 SOAD)의 새 앨범입니다.

 

RATM이 90년대 하드코어 씬을 대표하는 밴드로 자리잡았다면, SOAD는 2000년대의 다양한 뉴메틀 밴드들 중 가장 주목받는 밴드 중 하나가 되었죠. 거친 사운드와 선동적인 가사, 다양한 인종 구성 등에서 SOAD는 RATM과 많이 비교됩니다. 자본주의 시스템과 미 제국주의에 대한 직설적인 비판을 강렬한 하드코어 사운드에 실어 전달하려던 것이 RATM이었다면, SOAD는 미국의 제국주의에 대한 보다 직접적인 비판을 그들만의 사운드로 표현하고 있죠. 또한 스패니쉬인 잭 덜라로차(Zack de la Rocha)와 흑인인 탐 모렐로(Tom Morello)가 주축인 RATM과 비슷하게 SOAD는 범이슬람 문화권인 아르메니아 출신으로 구성되었습니다.

 

그러나 (당연한 얘기일지도 모르지만) SOAD는 RATM과 많은 차이를 보이고 있습니다. SOAD의 음악을 듣다보면 상당한 이질감을 느끼게 되는데, 그 정체는 아마 아랍 문화권의 음계를 사용하고 있기 때문이 아닌가 합니다. 뉴메틀 밴드들은 하이브리드적인 경향이 강해서 장르의 크로스오버를 많이 시도하는데, SOAD의 음악적 시도는 의외로(!) 매우 성공적이었다고 할 수 있겠습니다.

 

약간 뽕짝스러운-_- 이들의 스타일이 잘 드러납니다.

이런 음악적인 차이 외에도, RATM은 하버드 출신인 모렐로의 영향인지 지적이고 전략적인 이미지가 강한 반면, SOAD는 그러한 면이 별로 보이지 않습니다. RATM은 직접적인 현실("Freedom")을 분석하고 명시적인 상징을 공격("Sleep Now in the Fire")하여 시스템에 저항하려 한다면, SOAD는 자신의 급진적인 음악을 공연장을 넘어선 현실공간에서 풀어내지 못한다는 느낌이죠.

 

그럼에도 이들의 미제국주의에 대한, 그리고 미국 대중문화에 대한 비판은 매우 직설적이며 많은 논쟁을 만들어내고 있습니다. Biohazard의 에반 세인펠드(Evan Seinfeld)같이 애국심 투철한 인물은 SOAD를 "아르메니아 난민"이라고까지 표현하며 "그렇게 미국이 싫으면 떠나라"라는 발언을 했었죠.^_^;;; RATM의 해체 이후, SOAD는 탐 모렐로의 Audioslave나 Pearl Jam과 함께 논쟁거리를 만들 수 있는 몇 안되는 밴드 중 하나임이 분명한 것 같습니다.
