뭐하고 사나

Alison Balsom이 도시에 왔다. 그녀가 이십 분 나오는 공연을 한달 전에 예매해 다녀왔다. 가장 싼 좌석이었고 그녀의 뒤통수만 조그맣게 보였다. 소리만 들으면 되니까. 뭐, 상관없었다.

Elizabeth Bishop의 사랑-인생을 다룬 브라질 영화를 역시 브라질 친구의 소개로 보게 됐다. 지난 초여름 도시에서 열리는 영화제에서 상영되었으나 놓치고 디비디를 구하느라 진을 빼다가 거의 포기하던 차에 이 친구가 알려줬다. 고마운 녀석.

우울함이 극치를 달리고 있고 위험 지수를 깨닫고는 있는데 좀처럼 개선의 여지가 없다. 살아있는 시체와 같다고나 할까. 외관으로는 뭐, 남들은 알아차릴 수 없는 그런 상태. 잠깐 여행을 다녀오겠다는 결심을 굳히는 데에만 열흘이 넘게 걸렸다. 다녀온다고 좋아지진 않겠지만 더 나빠지진 않았으면 하는 바람.

시 하나, 한국어로 옮긴 시를 찾고 있는데 이것도 실패. 내가 옮겼더니 영 시맛이 안나더라. 그것도 실패. 그래서 그냥 원어로 복사.

First Snow

The snow
began here
this morning and all day
continued, it's white
rhetoric everywhere
calling us back to why, how,
whence such beauty and what
the meaning; such
an oracular fever! flowing
past windows, an energy it seemed
would never ebb, never settle
less than lovely! and only now,
deep into night,
it has finally ended.
The silence
is immense,
and the heavens still hold
a million candles; nowhere
the familiar things:
stars, the moon,
the darkness we expect
and nightly turn from. Trees
glitter like castles
of ribbons, the broad fields
smolder with light, a passing
creekbed lies
heaped with shining hills;
and though the questions
that have assailed us all day
remain- not a single
answer has been found-
walking out now
into the silence and the light
under the trees,
and through the fields,
feels like one.
