Sensing the strong resistance by the affected people due to the proposed POSCO Steel Plant in Erasama block of Jagatsinghpur, the respective governments of India and Orissa did not dare to bring the South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak to Ersama. President Lee was the India’s Chief Guest for Republic Day Celebration at New Delhi. He was supposed to lay the foundation stone of the Project. People’s resistance prevented the authorities to dare for any such step and president Lee has been compelled to think for his return journey from Delhi itself.

But, the Orissa CM Naveen Patnaik rushed to Delhi with a special flight earlier in the day to meet Mr. Lee to explain about the delay in the implementation of the $12 billion mega steel plant project near Paradeep considered to be the biggest single dose of FDI in India.

After the meet the Chief Minister announced before the Press ‘I have assured him that work on the project would be expedited. I have also assured that the work will start soon.’ Both the governments at the Centre and the State are in an offensive mood to counter the people’s resistance and acquire the 4004 acres’ of lands by hook or crook.

As soon as the news of aggressive posture of the governments reached to the people, they have started their protest dharana at Balitutha blocking the entry points to the proposed plant area. About three thousand people under the leadership of POSCO Pratirodh Sangram Samiti(PPSS) have been found resolving to carry on the protest actions for an indefinite period. “The dharna will continue for an indefinite period to prevent the South Korean company from acquiring fertile land for its project,” PPSS leader Abhaya Sahu said. ‘People are ready to go to any extent for their survival as farming is the chief source of their livelihood’, he claimed.

Abhay Sahu also appealed to the people and organizations throughout the country to extend their solidarity and supports to their movement and save the lives and livelihood of thousands of people threatened to be thrown out of their lands.
