똑같이 물 건너 왔어도 요상시런 의학서적들과 달리 표지랑 종이가 가볍다는 게 참 좋다. 에린 브로코비치 사진도 나왔는데, 허걱, 정말 미인이다. 영화에서 미녀대회 수상자라는 게 그냥 설정인 줄 알았는데. 진짠가봐.

 

서문을 쓴 이는 "탄압에도 결코 굴하지 않았던(bloodied but unbowed)" 자동차 산업 노동자들이 그러했듯이, 그리고 과학자와 환경운동가 등 여러 풀뿌리 활동가들이 보다 깨끗하고 안전한 자동차를 만들어가도록 싸워왔듯이, 전자산업에서도 rebellious spirit가 필요하다고, 그 어느 때보다도 더욱 절실히 필요하다고 말한다.

 

이들은 책을 통해 다음 네 가지 질문을 던지려 했다고 한다.

- 전자산업이 그 노동자들과 지역 사회, 그리고 자연환경에 무슨 영향을 끼쳤는가?

- 전자산업의 진화 과정에서 인종, 계급, 젠더, 지역적 불평등은 어떤 역할을 했는가?

- 세계 전자산업은 과연 어떻게 생산과 소비, 폐기 과정에서 보다 지속가능한 형태로 변화할 수 있는가?

- 하이테크 산업의 발달은 총체적이고 형평성 있는 성장을 가져올 수 있는가, 아니면 계속해서 경제 양극화를 조장하게 될 것인가?

 

그리고 전자산업의 세계화를 관찰하면서

- 이 산업은 일국 정부의 통제권을 넘어서서 작동하고 있으며

- 이 산업의 세계적인 부침에 따라 일국 또는 지역의 경제가 큰 영향을 받고 있으며

- 이 산업이 성공할수록 건강과 복지, 특히 젊은 여성과 이주노동자들의 생명(삶)이 위협받지만, 이 산업은 그에 대한 일체의 규제나 노동권, 그리고 보상에 대해 완강히 저항하고 있으며

- 이에 대한 저항도 비록 느리지만 점차 세계화되고,  그에 따라 점점 새로운 가능성이 보이기 시작한다는 점 등을 짚어준다.

1980년대 이후 대대적인 구조조정을 겪어온 전자산업 전반의 역사를 조망해준다. 캘리포니아 실리콘 밸리에서 시작하여 남미, 동유럽, 아시아로 옮겨간 전자산업의 흐름을 쫓으면서, 그 폐해가 이 산업이 주 노동력으로 삼고 있는 "제3세계 여성과 이주노동자, 그리고 그들의 삶터"에 미치는 영향, 그리고 규제가 적고 비용이 적게 드는 "전자폐기물 처리장"이 되는 현실 등...

산업의학 교과서의 대표저자인 LaDou 교수는 암 문제, 생식기계통 문제, HSE 연구보고서의 제한점,  IBM 노동자들의 소송 문제 등을 하나하나 짚으면서 반도체 산업 노동보건문제를 개괄하고 있다. (조만간 이 아저씨가 한국 반도체 노동자들의 백혈병 문제에 대해서도 쓰게 만들어야지)

미국 실리콘밸리의 산타클라라 직업보건센터 얘기, 스코틀랜드 반도체공장 직업병 노동자들의 모임 PHASE Two 얘기, 대만의 RCA 공장 노동자들과 지역주민들의 얘기, 그리고 중국, 일본 등 반도체 산업이 건강과 환경을 황폐화시킨 사연들과 그에 맞서 싸운 역사들이 소개된다. 지금 읽고 있는 부분은 아만다 휴이스와의 인터뷰인데, IBM이 진실을 은폐하기 위해 고집부려온 얘기를 읽다보니 가슴이 답답해왔다. 우리도 저런 일을 겪어야 할까, 우리에게 과연 저 과정을 견디고 끝까지 남아 싸울 산업보건이나 법률 분야의 전문가들이 있을까, 뭔가 그들이 빼먹은 것을 채우면서 모색할 만한 다른 길은 없을까....
